I think I'd paver/ brick whatever that space. Add some potted plants or landscaping on the outside to make it pretty. Add some sliding doors, big double door, or something to the kitchen to otherwise open it up to entertaining. On nice days you can have a huge open space there with the kitchen. Maybe make it to where you have a TV under the patio that can be seen through the courtyard and the kitchen for games?

The only time you will use that space is likely if you have a party. Its nice to have overflow space, and that's basically what that is.

You could have a fireplace there if you wanted, they are overrated IMO.

You wanted an outdoor kitchen and now you’re redesigning the floor plan. lol

I did what you’re describing in the OP. The biggest difference is that my outdoor kitchen meets the courtyard and the back yard right at the corner of the house, which is also the kitchen.

I like looking out of the bay windows and seeing the smoker’s thermometer during the summer time. It’s also nice to go from the grill island into the house easily if nobody wants to eat outside (summer time).

If I were you, I’d figure out a way to move the courtyard to the corner of the house. Then, make it an outdoor kitchen.

I would want a small walk in closet in the study.

That would “legally” make it a bedroom...which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing as far as value goes.

Thanks for all those who weighed in on this thread.

The builder came back and said we have to flip the layout so that the courtyard is on the right and now I'm concerned that the house to that side will block sunlight.. trying to figure out if a shady courtyard might be beneficial in some way. I'll probably go with flatwork instead of sod there now.

I’d do a lighted zen garden with a small water feature and minimal landscaping with an interesting fence behind:

Don’t do an outdoor kitchen there if you are doing a pool. Just make it a “tranquility” courtyard for reading/drinking coffee.

Turn that fireplace into the family room. It’s pointless where it is.

If you have anything other than small sedans that is really a 1 car garage. And I’d do 1 large garage door ILO of 2.

Pick a design that doesn’t have a side courtyard if you imagine all your outdoor activity in the back?
