Just received a quote to replace 1 of my 2.5 ton systems (air handler, condenser, ductwork, everything) for $9571 for Ruud 16 seer single stage and $12,101 for Ruud 17 seer two stage.

Both have 10 year parts warranty. The 17 seer has 10 years parts & labor warranty.

Air handler is in attic across house from attic access, which I assume drives up labor. Theoretically I could pull the siding from under my carport and they could literally go up right next to the unit which is just inside the entrance from my carport.

Are these prices crazy? Or am I just crazy?

Not sure about Ruud, but I had 2 carrier units installed a couple of years ago.

it was 20K (10k each)

That did not include ductwork

Those prices seem to be in line with prices I was quoted 2 years ago for equivalent 16 SEER single stage and 18 SEER 2 stage Trane systems, and my quotes did not include replacing ducts. My quote was on 4-ton unit but there is not massive increase in price going between 2.5 and 4 ton equipment. I doubt location of the air handler in the attic relative to access has anything to do with pricing - they deal with that stuff daily. 10 year parts warranty is standard on all HVAC brands. 10 year labor warranty on the 2 stage system is good. What’s the labor warranty on the single stage unit?

I would certainly entertain more quotes but only from known HVAC firms with a good reputation and track record. The installer is more important than the name brand/manufacturer of the equipment. Did the firm giving you quotes conduct a manual J and manual D to size the HVAC and ducts? That’s one way to assess if you have a quality firm.

Just confirmed this with them. Doesn't really make a difference.

None as far as I am aware.

They did not. Of which was disappointing. However, they have the arguably the best reputation and easily the best service of anyone in the area. I've dealt with a few others in the past. The owner of the company is who just came give the quote and simultaneously replaced the capacitor and added freon.

I’m sure it’s at least a 1 year labor warranty which is pretty standard - you should ask though.

If it’s a reputable firm you are comfortable with with good references its better to pay a little more upfront. Many companies apparently don’t use manual J to determine appropriate size units and rather go by rules of thumb, like 1 ton per 500 sq ft of living/conditioned area or just swap out with the same size the homeowner currently has. Is a 2 1/2 ton system what you have now?

Here are a couple links to earlier threads on HVAC pricing.

I am planning on replacing two units, they are getting up in age but I can make it through the summer.

I plan on getting quotes after Thanksgiving when the companies will not be as busy.

2400 conditioned. I have two 2.5 ton systems I believe. They both condition about the same volume.

When you get the new units, if you want the warranty (and everyone does) you have to register the units with the company.

I do not know why but if you don't they will not honor the warranty if they are not registered.

Just paid $9,334 out the door for a 5 ton, 16 seer Trane system. Did NOT include any replacement duct work, but it did include adding a second return since our only existing one was inadequate. Conditioning around 2,550 sqft so seems in line with your two, 2.5 units.

ETA 10 years parts, 10 years compressor, 20 years heat exchanger, and 2 years labor included.

I think most of the HVAC contractors register it with the manufacturer for you as a courtesy to you for the business you gave them and then send you a copy of the paperwork for your files, but you need to ask, and that provides the 10 year warranty on the HVAC parts and 20 year parts warranty on the furnace (gas) but if it isn’t registered with the manufacturer after installation then it reverts to a 5 year warranty on parts.

i will tell you this, its gonna cost you more to change them separately then both at the same time. its ten times easier to do both while they are there on site then to have to come back and do it all again as a separate job later

average cost for a whole new system including ductwork is $2000 per ton so the answer to the question you asked is that is only a $5k job

This is in the range I’ve seen. I sure as shite hope it isn’t $10k for a 2.5 ton because I’m going to need to replace mine soon

That is a good price - who did the install for you? Natural gas or electric heat?

I was quoted $8,900 for a 4-ton base-line 14 Seer Trane In late July 2018 using existing ductwork and line-set.

Gas heat. He would not hook up the gas line but that was easy for a plumber and only a few bucks.
