I have been filling my backyard with zoysia palisades sod. The first 9 pallets went in April 2. (8 more 2 weeks later. Final 2 last week)

I’ve got some nuts edge and a few grassy weeds pushing through on some gaps and some of batch 2 was thin and some preexisting weeds are pushing up. I’ve started spot treating with Celsius and sledgehammer.

The question really is… what next? Should I think of fertilizing yet? And if so, with what?

I would go with a balance mix so you don’t over do it with Nitrogen. Try to find a 10-10-10 fertilizer or maybe just use Milignorite.

Sample your soil before fertilizing. The soil results will come with the proper fertilizer for you grass.

You could likely fertilize the older section. Zoysia doesn’t require a ton of fertilizer, so I’d prob only go with 1/2-3/4 lb N per 1000 sqft. It’s only recommended to put down 3-4 lbs per season.

Have you put any fertilizer on any of the lawn yet?

On the weed side, i would be very hesitant to spray any herbicides on 6 week old grass. Best to just deal with the weeds while the grass establishes its roots and then you can smoke the weeds later on, but that's me.

This is a good recommendation.

Sod comes pre-fertilized, at least that’s my understanding, but that’s good for about 2 months, so your first 2 installations of sod would be ready for fertilization in the first 2 weeks of June. Then you can repeat again, for the entire lawn, in early August and you are done for the year.

With what? If applied at a 1/2 lb of N per 1000 sq ft, something like a controlled release 15-5-15, 16-0-8, lawn fertilizer applied at 3 1/3 lbs per 1000 sq ft would provide that 1/2 lb N. Look for something with a nitrogen content between 15 and 20%. 15-x-x to 20-x-x.

As stated, be cautious on your use of herbicides on newly sodded turf. Read the label on the herbicides you are using - it will state that.

Lastly, nice lawn, and storage shed.

Thanks guys! I should probably do the soil sample just to see where I'm at. I had a ton of topsoil brought in before doing the sod, so who knows what it looks like.

The zoysia is growing like gangbusters. Batch 1 and 3 came from Foley, AL. Batch 2 came from Donaldsonville. No comparison. Foley AL is better than Donaldsonville in every conceivable measure now including grass. It will all even out but the stuff from AL had a very thick soil and root layer. The LA stuff was like gauze and very uneven in growth length.

Thanks for the compliments. We're very fortunate to have such a great yard. Even adding the pool and tons of concrete at the house we still have a lot of yard. It's all great until you have to pay for 19 pallets of sod or hundreds of feet of fence materials.

That shite from D’ville sucks. I’ve said it here plenty of times. Ones a sod farm ones a cane field. I’m catching hell in my back yard.

It was night and day different. It took me twice as long to lay the Dville crap because I had to gingerly carry each piece. 50% of it I had to reconstruct as I layed it down. Now the weeds are wanting to grow through those areas.

The Foley stuff was like someone relocated a gulf course to my yard. The last 2 pallets I laid on a Saturday morning. I couldn't pick them up on Monday morning. The roots had already grown that strong in 2 days.

If (god forbid) I have to lay sod again, I will do whatever it takes to ensure it comes out of AL. I've seen comments to that effect and I thought "how different can it be?" VERY

Where did you get the Foley Zoysia from?

This

Me...I wouldn't do anything to it just yet. I'd make sure all sections are well established and then uniformly fertilize all sections as one. It's been dry. You need several good rain soakings. With the new sod patience is a better approach than being aggressive.

All of it came from Woerner Turf on Airline. I know the first 9 pallets came out of Foley because we had a big washout rain the day before they were to harvest my order. The next 8 came from Donaldsonville. If I realized just how different in quality the deliveries would be I would have done everything possible to only get AL grass. Not sure if it is the luck of the draw or if you can specify.

It's all evening out but the Foley sod is way ahead. Even the last 2 pallets that were 15 days later than Donaldsonville is outpacing it.
