here’s the “feed your family” patch week 2.
looks like a lot of beans LOL
the “watermelon” I thought I had turns out to be a pumpkin. It’s huge now. Cantaloupe patch has about nine I can see so I’m excited about that
Eggplants are cranking

I’m jealous of you guys. I’m about to nuke everything in the garden except the watermelon. Between 80-90 hour work weeks and being out of town on vacation for a week, my garden is a disaster. It’s gonna take some work to get it back in order and I’m not sure I have the energy right now. Especially with the current temps.

I'm in a similar place as you. Just been a busy spring outside of gardening. And it shows
I'm a week away from being done with tomatoes. We should end the season at 300 lbs. I'm letting whatever bell peppers that are on get as big as they can in a week, then they're done. We'll be out of town the first part of July so perfect timing.
Okra and purple hulls are coming along, so I do have a little something to keep me busy when we get back. We haven't talked about a fall garden yet. We skipped last year because of the drought.

anyone ever done peanuts as a summer/cover crop? I’m about to turn my clover over and was thinking about dropping some raw peanuts to keep cover over the rest of summer

Mr Sausage did last year. He should chime in if he's not too busy melting over on the secrant

It was El Tiempo night for us.
Not sure if I would call peanuts a cover crop. You’d have to densely plant them and they don’t exactly create a big wide cover. And it takes a while for them to get to a point where they would out compete the weeds. But hell, try it and see how it works for you. Maybe I should have planted them later in the summer or more dense.
And we’ll be fine. A coach is replaceable.

I just planted peanuts this past weekend. First time i've tried.

Is anyone in SELA getting great tomato results on plants they grew from seeds?
If so- please let me know what kind of seeds you used.
My tomato plants look very healthy, but the blooms keep drying up and I have no damn tomatoes. On 10+ plants. For weeks.
ETA- other things- herbs, peppers, cucumbers, etc are doing great.

It’s just too hot. Tomatoes stop setting fruit when nighttime temps get too high. Even heat set varieties.

Tomatoes will not set fruit when temps hit 90.

Also, I have a small raised garden. This year I plant squash and stacked the plants so that they grow vertical up the stakes.
Reason I bring that up is that they have done really great, lots of squash from them.
But, reason I bring it up is that I’ve not had the first squash bug on any of the plants.
I don’t understand why that is(no bugs). Would love to know.

Well it's officially hot as balls out there. Garden is dealing with a full on assault from ants, bugs, and crabgrass. Despite all that, somehow my romas just keep on producing. I'm still splitting them 50/50 with the bugs.
Picked a few butternuts. The rest still have green stems, so I'm leaving them for another few days.
Not pictured, planted out the sweet potato clippings. That's all I'll be growing this summer and fall.

my tomatoes are still setting fruit though like you said it’s a wrasslin match with the insects. Eggplant is booming, cantaloupe is full of melons and watermelon just started to flower
I’m pretty excited about the cantaloupe…what am I looking for to determine ripeness?

Don't rush the cantaloupe, it won't ripen off the vine. I needs to fully turn color, no more green, and it'll almost separate itself from the stem. There are some decent youtubes that show examples.

This makes sense to me- but it surely hasn’t always been this way?
I remember years ago having a surplus all summer. (Different yard though) And when I was a kid my parents and their friends were always trading tomatoes in the summer.
I thought it was because my plants were in full sun (0 shade) 6+ hours a day. But we got a 50% overhead shade and while they don’t look like they are dying anymore, they aren’t making tomatoes.
I have 3 different varieties.
Is there no tomato that can beat the Louisiana heat?
