I don't think it's warm enough yet to need to water daily. Soil still retains moisture pretty well, and transpiration needs aren't there yet, especially if your bed is adequately mulched. Now once we are consistently in the upper 80s to 90 it will be a different story.

I overwatered early. I am watering about every third day but not saturating.

Every 3 days in raised beds?

I also think I overwatered early on and am backing off. Taking today and maybe tomorrow off (ran drip yesterday for an hour).

Good to know. I was watering daily and applied too much fertilizer to some seedlings (along with some more mature plantings), so my squash and cantaloupes are somewhat yellow. There is some new green growth coming, but I have a long way to go before they look like Pillage's squash a few posts up.... those things are beautiful.

What kind of mulch should I be using on small beds?

I am just guessing here. I may need to start every other day, but we have had a little rain, and it has been cloudy alot.

I had underwatered last year. I am trying to encourage some deeper root growth, so they dont get so scorched so fast when summer comes.

I use fall leaves and grass clippings. They're free.

I have this tied into my drip irrigation timer. It overrides the water timer if your soil moisture hits a set level.

I don't have much access to free leaves and such, so I buy a bale of chopped straw from TSC. It's covers a lot of ground and is easy to spread.

Well, it’s time to uncover them.

You're not going to self-pollinate?

Nah, I can’t consistently keep up with that. Gonna have to rely on pollinators.

I (my kids) rake pine needles in November and I save them. There’s a spot we go that has a cluster of pines all together.

Came home to two squash plants and a pepper cut off at the ground. Found the cutworm at the pepper. Didn’t find anything at the squash. The whole garden got sprayed. I am afraid my squash may just be a bust this year.

Sorry to hear that. Hope that's the last worm you see alive.

My squash is taking a hit as well.... after fruiting two butternut early, every one that starts to form now only grows a tiny 1/2" before yellowing and falling off. Thought it was overwatering, so will see if I back off and what happens.

Is there any way to stop kill/deter them? I lost a couple of cucumber shoots to something that cut them off at the base. I sprayed permethrin and spinosad.

I try not to use anything that will kill beneficials, so I use bt. But it supposedly washes off, so you have to reapply after rain.

I also just accept a certain amount of loss. In the fall something sawed off all my spinach and broccoli seedlings. I found that it helps to pour a beer before checking the garden.

Sounds like they’re not being pollinated.

Here are some pics of them. The flowers don’t even get close to opening before they start to turn yellow and fall off. They’re about the limengrh of my fingernail now and will turn yellow just like this and fall off.

Here are the first two that popped out almost immediately after transplanting.

Could it still be a pollinator issue?

If they’re not even opening then it could be some sort of stress or nutrient deficiency causing it. Another possibility is that since you have 2 large fruit growing already, the plant may not be able to support more right now so it’s just abandoning the flowers. My pumpkins did that a lot last year. Once they got big enough they set lots of fruit.
