They're typically better off direct sown. But yes, I'm trying to give them a little bit of a head start to beat the borers.

Pillage, do you recall if growing sweet potatoes has been discussed here?

Welp... You all have me convinced, I guess I will now too. Although I'll be able to start some in pots tomorrow, I won't be able to get any in the ground until early next week.

Without going through the thread, I think it was briefly mentioned. I don't believe the topic was fleshed out.

Okay, thanks.

Hey, does anybody want to give me some pointers for growing sweet potatoes? I have a large container and want to grow a few. The local feed store didn't have any seed potatoes. What do I do? Thanks!

Think you have to wait alittle bit for those. More summer type crop. I have tried and not been effective here in Texas. Might give another run this year on them.

I picked a bunch of carrots also.

I’m so jealous of those carrots I can’t stand it. Is there anything special to growing them? Last season I followed some guy’s specific advice to growing heaps and they just didn’t take off very well. I used a low nitrogen soil base with a little miracle-gro on the very top 2” to germinate the seeds. If I’m not successful this go around, I think I’ll try growing them in containers.

Loose soil and patience.

Seriously, I don’t do anything special. I put some triple 13 down about a week before planting the seeds, planted the seeds in September, and just left them alone.

You needs LOTS of room for the runners. I planted in 20 gallon grow bags and the vines took over everything on the deck. I was wrapping them around the pots to keep them tidy but it was just not a good experience for us. I got about 8 pounds of potatoes per plant. That was the good part. The bad was that I got raided by potato beetles and they make all of the potatoes bitter. That was my first and last time for sweet potatoes. Now, I have just doubled up on Irish varieties. Red, gold and white.

How are the yields on black eye peas, more particularly "phenomenal cowpeas?" I have two more SF in my raised bed reserved for watermelon, but now I'm thinking about planting the melon in-ground once it warms up and putting peas or carrots in the raised bed.

I also planted Kentucky wonder green beans, hot cherry, and shishito peppers yesterday.

Prepping seed potatoes today. We're planting in a few days

I can't wait to get my hands in some real dirt.

Digging in the dirt makes you happy. The more I dig in the dirt, the happier I get.

My two chores right now are getting an acre property raked, and prepping and planting my garden. If I start playing in the dirt, I won't rake.

So now my rule for myself is that I must complete a certain amount of raking and bagging leaves before I can play in the dirt. There has been a lot of raking going on around here.

Seedlings are doing well during the hardening process and loving the warmer weather! They are growing fast now!

So, my plan was to finally get into the beehive this weekend. I haven’t been able to in months. Between weather, work, and the kids I just haven’t found an opportunity. Walked into the backyard this afternoon to just go check on them. Well, I’ve seen this before. I think I’m about to lose half my bees.

LSU has a sweet potato research facility around Winsboro. They will mail you “slips” when they’re ready. You usually don’t plant them until May, they love the heat. Make sure you have a large area because they vine like crazy. If you have any deer in the area watch out, they will find it and eat every leaf off. I planted some two years ago and it was petty fun to do.

Is it better to leave them outside 24-7 at this point or bring them indoors under the light when there’s no direct sun on them early in the morning or in the late evening?

As long as the weather is warm enough I leave them outside 24/7. Might as well let them get fully adapted to outside conditions.

I'm ill prepared for all of this right now. But I'll have to see what I can do.

Why do you think you're about to lose your hive?
