How can I get rid of the stink bugs on my peppers? I’ve been spraying with some fertilome that has neem in it but doesn’t seem very effective.

Pyrethrin will kill them. But you’ll have to stay on top of them with weekly sprays (sometimes more if you have a bad infestation), because pyrethrin has a very short residual and only works on contact. Neem oil may deter them from feeding as often, but it won’t stop them. However it can help with getting rid of them over time. But you’ll need to use 100% cold pressed neem oil. Azadirachtin is a key ingredient in neem that has higher levels when using 100% cold pressed. When ingested it can interrupt growth cycles and stop them from feeding as often. For the young nymphs it may suffocate them. For sap sucking insects like stink bugs it’s recommended to use it as a root drench and foliar spray for maximum benefit. You’ll need an emulsifier when using it. I prefer liquid castile soap, but Dawn will also work. Remember to not spray it in direct sunlight cause it’ll burn your plants.
So with regular use of pyrethrin and neem oil, you should see a reduction over time. But I don’t think you’ll ever get rid of them completely. Back in the day when I didn’t know any better I would use harsh chemicals. Still had stink bugs.

So I just got back from a week long vacation in the ozarks. Had my sister in law watching after the garden while I was away. She did some watering and picking. But when I got home I was not expecting what I saw. Gone for a week and things got out of control.
First of all, she didn’t do any weeding or pruning (not that I was expecting her to), so I had to clean that up today. Now back to routine maintenance.
Took a few pictures while cleaning up. And I hope my kids like cantaloupe. Watermelon is getting bigger, and a second one is growing! Also this past week the purple hulls exploded!
I did have to harvest a good bit more once I got home, but most of this she picked.

Harvested alittle under half the potatoes. These had the plant tops browning. Pulled almost all the squash. Unreal how well they did this year in mushroom compost and consistent irrigation. We’ll be planting some okra, black eyed peas, pumpkins and gourds tomorrow evening in their place.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a variety of bush beans to plant? I have never grown them before. Also can you grow a good fall crop? LSU Agcenter says you can plant from 9/1 to 10/1 for fall crop. Thanks for any advice.

For whatever reason, only my fall and late winter/early spring gardens get hit by critters. My summer garden is largely untouched, but the second some broccoli or cauliflower starts getting ready...boom! Rabbits

Picked a cantelope this morning, but it was too soon. I have about 10 that are fist-size or bigger right now. Looking at about 5 watermelon right now.
My cucumbers are looking yellowish and not really filling out after the first two I picked. I'm reading it's either from too much water, or not enough, too much fertilizer, or not enough. I suppose I should just guess at one of those and cross my fingers? Lol

I'm pretty annoyed. I hit the Gurney's BOGO for 1 cent deal a few weeks back and loaded up on potatoes. I got an email this week saying they were out of stock and canceled my order.
Last weekend I took out about a quarter of my tomato plants and put a couple of pumpkin seeds in to start germing. The tomatoes slowed way down on producing but my creoles are still holding up, flowering, and have new tomatoes on them so I'll let them hold on as long as they can. The forecast looks stupid hot thought with multiple 100+ temp days so they probably won't make it much longer.
I got in a trimmed up the blackberry bush. Took out all but 2 old canes and trimmed the tops of the new ones to get better lateral growth this coming year. The bush was kind of a mess this past year but I couldn't keep up with picking so it wasn't all bad.
I've got my first couple of okra so far. They are loving the heat and dry weather. Same with the peppers.
I'm still waiting on the garlic. I've got my first scape that I forgot to go back and clip yesterday so I'll grab that today. I planted them a little late in December so they probably have a little while longer until they are ready.
Yard long beans are going nuts. I can't give the beans away fast enough. Going to try blanching and freezing some tonight then thaw and cook this weekend. If they hold up ok then I'll bust out the vacuum sealer and get to work.
Something new I'm trying is planting some sunflowers. My goal isn't to get seeds as much as it is to provide a pollen/nectar source for the bees. Apparently the Lemon Queen variety is especially attractive to them. I found out about this a couple weeks ago so I'll be late providing for them during dearth but next year I'll be sure to plant early and get them blooming June/July.
I've got a couple watermelon that are doing good too. I can't remember how long it takes them to ripen though. Seems like it was a while. Hopefully they are ready for 4th of July.
The bees are doing really good. I have been holding off on adding another brood box. They have another 1 1/2 to 2 frames to draw comb out on. Idk how much more they will be doing though with the lack of pollen and nectar now. I may have to wait until the fall.

I have yet to be able to order seed potatoes for fall planting regardless of the seed company. Even when I stay on top of availability. They’re either sold out or not even offered. Then in Jan/Feb, when I want to order for March planting, most won’t ship them until mid to late April. I’ve had to buy them from Tractor Supply and luckily, they had them in earlier than last year.

I’m dealing with the same thing. The cukes I planted along a 16 ft fence panel & fertilized, are slow growing & putting out odd shaped cucumbers that turn yellow quickly. Some others I put in a smaller space w/out fertilizer are healthy & doing well though. My garden has been pretty ‘meh’ thus far. Still waiting for tomatoes though. Maybe fall will be better.

Speaking of critters, I found one living in my purple hulls this afternoon.

I pulled 6 of my 8 roma plants this afternoon. They were done. No more tomatoes on them and looking ugly. The other 2 aren’t far behind. Same with the Cherokee Purples and beefmasters. Peppers are still doing well, okra and purple hulls are growing like weeds, and the cucumbers just won’t stop coming.

Watermelon and cantaloupe are still looking good. Can’t wait to harvest them, but they aren’t there yet. This weekend I’m going to pull the sunflowers and get the pumpkin seeds planted.
It’s going to be stupid hot the next couple of weeks it looks like. Stay hydrated and watch out for heat illness. Be careful everyone.
