Absolutely. They will sprout new roots wherever the soil makes contact with the stem. It’s especially good for leggy plants that may have weaker stems.

What is the barrier that's visible in this picture? Some kind of layer to help prevent weeds? Also, is that just some kind of leveling block under the landscape timbers?

Are you talking about the gray sheet under the landscape timbers? If so:

You’re really analyzing my photos lately.

Yeah it’s just a wood block. The old landscape timbers had kind of sunk into the ground, and the ground was a little unlevel. So I just used that to make it level with the new section. I still need to go and fill it in with some dirt/sand mix.

I'm going to give this a shot and am looking for all the help I can get. You seem like one of the the resident experts

10-4 on the leveling block In my first attempt at a garden I had used landscape timbers years back, and the ground eventually just took over the first layer, on the outside. So I wasn't sure if it was just a way to raise it up further, or to help w/ drainage etc.

Does that fabric go under everything, or just around the edges?

Happy to help! But I would never call myself an expert. I’m always trying to learn new things and I still make plenty of mistakes.

None of it extends into my main garden. I only have it between the raised boxes where all of the wood mulch is. You can see in this picture that I cut away any that extended into the raised boxes.

ETA: After adding mulch:

My daughter sent me a photo of some "strawberries" that were painted rocks. Someone claimed that you put the rocks in your strawberry patch, the birds and other critters learn that they aren't for eating. Then when your strawberries get ripe, they don't mess with them because they are accustomed to finding non-edible rocks. Not sure if I buy into that, but it would be worth a try.

I’m going to have to try that. Especially when they are not bearing fruit.

ETA: I was also considering once the blackberries starting coming in putting up pie pans and pinwheels. But I’m hoping I just produce enough to where if I lose some it doesn’t bother me so much.

At least your kids will have fun painting the rocks. Find triangular ones in a bag of marble chips, paint red, let dry, then paint green caps and gold or brown polka dots for seeds.

Everything is doing well in the garden. The weather the last week has gotten everything going. All of the tomato plants have baby tomatoes on them and the pepper plants are growing and setting fruits. Looks like my first vegetable will be zephyr squash.

Weather says 35 on Saturday night and I’ll be out of town this weekend. How screwed are the tomatoes I have outside?

Yea what the hell man.

That said, last year when I gambled and planted before the last frost I had success by covering them with plastic walmart bags.

I’ve yet to plant. Glad for that since we may have a freeze and definitely a frost tonight.

How long do y’all run you soaker hoses for?

I finally got mine set up for the first time. I usually run the regular lawn sprinkler for 20 minutes so I decided to cut 5 minutes off that with the soaker hose. That was way too long. The lawn next to the beds were soaked.

I may end up with a decent blackberry yield. They are so loaded with flowers right now, and the bees are still all over them.

Got a few small tomatoes starting to pop up.

And the Marconi and cayenne peppers are starting to make a few. I don’t see any jalapeño yet, and the California wonder are kind of lagging behind all of the others.
