I do for most pepper except for bells or very large peppers. I've found they don't respond as well to it. Carmens, Escamillos, smaller peppers like Shishito, Jalapeno, Jimmy Nardello, etc. all respond really well to it. I top whenever the seedlings have four true leaves.

I read somewhere that when the seedling starts to Y at the top is when you top them. So I topped a bunch of my jalapeño and cayenne today that were forming a Y and had some flowers starting. This is my first time ever topping peppers, so I’m anxious to see if it makes a big difference. I only have 1 jalapeño that is smaller and hasn’t made the Y at the top, so I left that one for now. But I’m thinking maybe I won’t top that one so I can use it for comparison.

I used to do the same, but a couple of years ago I was short on time to plant out because I started late (trend?), so I topped them once they had four true leaves. Didn't notice any difference and all plants were very healthy and productive, so I've just done it that way since. It takes a little bit for them to recover after you top them.

I topped my peppers 2 years ago and they did pretty good. They had a real good structure holding up when they were heavy with peppers.

I didn’t do it last year but had filled my beds with some poor soil so none of my plants looked amazing minus the okra and beans.

Good to know. Maybe I’ll give them a little bit of fertilizer to give them a boost.

Mid March is fast approaching. I feel like I still have a ton to do before I put everything in the ground. And not enough time to do it.

May have nuked my eggplants and peppers in my little greenhouse.

Yeah, I’m behind on the prep too.

Heard that. I got home last night and messed around in the backyard until about 830 with my headlamp on. Mostly turning compost pile and watering in pre-emergent.

I need to get my seedlings into 4' pots asap. I can see the roots growing through the peat trays. Everything sprouted pretty well though and no dampening so far. I've got more tomato plants than I know what to do with but I may go ahead and plant some out now and if we get a late frost or cold spell that knocks them out I'll have backups.

I've got beefmasters, cherokee purple, and black krim. For peppers I've got pablano, san ardo, thin cayenne, grand bell, and mammoth jalapenos. I'll direct sow my cucumbers and yard long beans in the next couple of weeks. I've had garlic in the ground for a while and it is doing well.

My blackberry bush is out of control and I need to trim that up. I lost one blueberry bush in a pot last summer when we had a long stretch without rain and I wasn't paying attention. The other made it though and I just bought a replacement for the other pot. I've got some strawberries I am going to put in a half barrel too since the boys love them so much.

Lots to do. One good thing is that the wife and I decided for Lent we would give up our cellphones when at the house and the kids are awake. I don't think we are on it all the time but we figured it would be a good thing to try and dedicate more time towards the kids. Not going to lie, I got a lot more done around the house last night. The boys like helping me with plants and gardening so I'll have them help me pot the seedlings tonight.

That’s pas bon. I was holding out hope that my eggplant may turn around, but they are toast. Will definitely need some transplants.

That’s a really good idea. I don’t think we realize how much time those things suck out of our day. I gave up alcohol on weekdays. My wife says she needs her wine, so I’m going at this one alone.

Absolutely. I could tell day 1 it made a difference in productivity.

I did that last year. It started out as giving it up period but my wife convinced me to change it to just weekdays. She needed a drinking partner on the weekends

I've been giving up alcohol altogether for the last 5-6 years. One year I just gave up beer and that went really well for about two weeks, then I determined that I'd probably wind up single or arrested if I kept up with straight liquor through lent .

It's kind of a needed thing for me to be honest because I drink too often to begin with, and after hunting season through Mardi Gras gets pretty aggressive. My fiance has done whole 30 and given up alcohol for the last few years and didn't have anybody to do the whole 30 part with this year, so I'm giving that a shot too. I'm one week in on no alcohol and 4 days in on whole 30 and the whole 30 part is much harder. Definitely going to have to get on top of meal prepping on the weekends.

It's amazing how much better I sleep when I'm not drinking often.

On topic, here are some photos of my limited tomato and pepper seedling stock. You can see the peppers recovering from being topped about 7-10 days ago.

. Everything is doing well. Squash and zucchini are coming along nicely too. I'm hoping to plant out the weekend of March 19.

That’s my target as well. I’m going to try to haul in more dirt this weekend to top off my boxes if weather permits.

It’s mushroom compost delivery day. I’m embarrassed by my seedlings compared to y’all’s. Mine are just now putting on the second leaves after sprouting.

I always get a little jealous reading this thread in March, when it’s still too cold in the Ozarks to plant. But, I’ll rest easy when I’m still growing all summer when it’s too hot/wet further south for certain things.

Lately I’ve been stocking up on materials for the season, as I expect a run on gardening supplies this year + supply chain problems.

Looks like vermiculite is limited this year, can’t find big bags anywhere and nurseries say they’re back ordered for months.

I started late, my peppers and eggplants bounced back a bit I have hope they will survive.

My tomatoes are about 6” tall and I need to hit everything with fertilizer to give it a boost.

I went out of town and my kids eventually watered with water from inside the house that had ran through a softener. Combined with the cold in the garage and me not setting the lights low enough, it’s a miracle they are still alive.

Too early to put vegetables in the ground in BR? Looks like a handful of 40 degree days in the next two weeks. Got my boxes and pots laid out last night, kinda antsy to fill them up.
