Anyone have any ideas on the current turnaround time for soil samples at the LSU AG center right now?
It usually takes them about a week from my experience.

I decided to go all in on my trial of grow bags, filled 12ea 25gal, 4ea 20gal, and 2ea 50gal. PUV, you were right the 50gal are tough to move on my own. I don’t think I will have issues moving the 20/25g myself (until they have 4 or 5ft of tomato plants growing in them).
I haven’t finalized my growing plan but I think 2ea Tomato plants in one 20gal pot is probably going to be the best option but I am going to try doing 3ea tomatoes in a couple of the 25gal pots to see how it affects the yields.

My biggest concern with them growing that closely would be disease and mildew issues due to not enough air circulation between plants---especially if in S. La.
Also, do you plan on staking them in some way so the plants don't just fall over and spread out on the ground?

Yes, I am going to stake or cage them depending on the varietal fruit size.
I usually prune/train the larger fruited varieties that I stake and use drip irrigation as much as possible to avoid fungal disease.
The 20/25gal pots are about 20” in diameter so I don’t think there will be a problem going 2ea per pot, 3 might be pushing but being my first year trying this system I will take the successes and failures and try to dial it in better next year.

Hey, you don't try, you don't learn-----good or bad.

Besides the potential disease issue, I’d also be concerned about root space. Indeterminates and even some determinates make really large root systems. Personally I would do 1 tomato each per 25 g bag. Unless they are dwarf varieties. You may be able to get away with 2, but you will definitely have to water daily once they get big. Especially when it gets hot.
But hey, you make do with what you got. It could work out just fine for you. But those are a few things to be wary of.

My strained relationship with Brad’s Atomic Grape continues. Both of my seedlings got to about 7” then damped off. Gotta be a bad batch of seeds.
Man, that is disheartening. All of my eggplant seedling have done this. They weren’t 7” tall, though. But it looks like I’m going to have to try to find some transplants this year.
All of my tomato plants had to be transplanted into 6” pots. They were root bound in the 4” pots and starting to struggle. This should buy me enough time until I plant out. Had to bring them all in since the low tonight is 32. But it’s supposed to warm up the rest of the week and I’ll be able to put them back outside shortly. Also, I think it’ll be time to start bringing the peppers outside as well.

You’re a good bit ahead of me. I probably won’t plant out til the third weekend of March. Everything else seems to be doing fine though. I topped my peppers last week.
I started some squash and zucchini seeds and they’ve sprouted over the last couple days. I normally plant them out the weekend after tomatoes but I’m gonna do it all at once this year.

Good to know. Thanks!
How many eyes you putting per seed? I usually do two or three eyes per seed, but I planted double the seeds this year, with one eye per seed. Want to see if that yields a decent crop of bigger potatoes or a smaller crop of the same size potatoes. Guess we shall see.

I spoke too soon when I replied to your last post about them. Mine are around 4-5" and just damped off. 2 of 3 are done for. Fingers crossed for number 3.

It's so bizarre. I've never had that problem with any other tomato seedling out of hundreds that I've started over the last few years.

What kind of starting mix are yall using?
Posted on 2/28/22 at 10:07 am to BallsEleven
I use a peat moss/perlite/worm casting mixture. I never have problems with any of my seedlings except for the stupid atomic grapes.

Do you leave water in the trays to water from the bottom for seeds/seedlings too, or only the bigger plants? I did that last year, which was my first time really trying to grow a lot from seed, but had a lot of damping off. Was doing more watering/misting daily this year because I was worried about it and didn't want thing to be too wet. But it seems like it would be good for bigger plants, I guess.

Where does everyone get started plants? I've started from seeds so far, but didn't really do too much this year. And I looked at the weather and thought the end of last week was our last cold snap, so planted everything yesterday evening. I should have paid more attention to the weather, because I woke up with frost on the windshield this morning. The tomato plants I started were already 95% chance of not making it, but the 2 I bought from Home Depot on a whim are probably hurting today.
Was going plant direct seeds for cucumbers and beans throughout the week.

I always water my seedlings from the bottom and allow them to wick up into the pot up until I transplant them. Even as they get bigger. I don’t add more water until the soil is mostly dry. Never had a problem with damping off doing it this way. I try to never wet the leaves cause it could invite disease. I usually get some algae and fungus on the soil no matter how long I let them dry. But it never seems to be detrimental to the plants.
I’m not sure what’s going on with my eggplant seedlings. They’re not really damping off. They just shriveled up after a few days under the light. It was a batch of seeds from a couple of years ago, so they may have gone bad.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Between 2-4. Last year, I just planted the whole seed potato. Got a modest return from 30 plants but it was my first real try at growing potatoes.

What’s the consensus on topping peppers? Do y’all do it?
