I got the first half of my garden planted last night. Now to put up my arch for cucumbers, beans, and squash and get some other starts rolling. All of my potato plants exploded with growth this week. Most have grown a foot in less than a week. My onions and shallots seem a bit ragged at the moment and two of my garlic plants bolted. It looks like I may actually have to turn my sprinkler system back on as well.

Get "The Squirrelinator" and some sunflower seed. Hint: that tray that is the depth of the trap is NOT for keeping your car clean.
I had the discussion with my wife last night. I basically said we have 3 options.
1. We try to distract them with a feeder. I did this last year with marginal success. The problem was they go through the corn so fast I’d have to buy a bag every week and replace them on the feeder almost daily. So the cost and inconvenience added up.
2. Buy a trap (like the squirrelinator) and “relocate” them (in the pond). Surprisingly most of those types of traps aren’t that cheap.
3. Motion activated sprinkler. Also not that cheap.
I guess the fourth option would be to just leave them be to have their way with my garden. My wife and I both agreed on the sprinkler. I figured the trap would work, but more squirrels would eventually move in and we’d have to continue trapping. At least with the sprinkler, the current residents can stick around. But hopefully they can be conditioned to stay out of my garden.

I've got 5 or 6 stray cats that hang out in the neighborhood around my office because of some crazy cat ladies in the area.
Come and get'em!!

My Blue Heeler keeps the squirrels at bay. He runs around the yard, especially the area around the garden all day treeing those SOB's. I'm thinking about making him a hunting dog at this point
Was tilling up the rows last night to refresh them so I can plant this weekend. The whole time he was treeing squirrels . Meanwhile, my border collie-lab mix is upside down on her back, sleeping on the mulch bed under the satsuma tree without a care in the world.

What’s going on with my peppers? Just these 2 are doing it. All the others look great, one is even trying to flower.

Hmm. That’s a good question. Did you mess with any herbicides lately?

No but they had started this when they were still inside. I figured moving outdoors would help things. And they are right next to the healthy ones so I figure if they got any blow over from a neighbor, the others would be affected as well.

Looks like they’re growing some healthy foliage up top. See if they outgrow the problem. I’m not sure what that could be.

I've had peppers do weird stuff like that before, but they righted themselves.
Only a week in and it looks like a couple of my tomato plants are already getting the same bacterial spot bullshite I was dealing with last year. I'm going to try using liquid copper this year as a preventative.

I built a PVC-framed net (with a door) around my garden last year to keep the squirrels and birds out. It has been the only effective way to keep them frickers out. Granted, my garden is only 12'x3'.

I use a combo of corn and Benjamin, traps and sprinkle cayenne around plants. The corn/pellets combo is the most effective. When they start rutting, shoot the lead squirrel.

Squirrels are pretty smart. They're going to figure out how to avoid the sensor and sneak up from behind.

Well, I do plan on moving it around. Also, thanks to JBE closing schools ( ), I took off of work next week to stay at home with the kids. So I plan on doing some early morning observation (and sniping).

Should be fun. I built enclosures around all of my gardens. Looks like Ft. Knox around here.

I had to work today. But so far it must have worked. Not one dig site in the garden today.

I witnessed it in action this morning. Squirrel got about 20 feet from it and the sprinkler scared him off. I just set up the GoPro to see if I can get some good POV video.
