Do y'all sucker your cherry or grape tomato plants?
Posted on 5/11/19 at 2:58 pm to TigerBait1971
I usually do, but I got lazy this year. I came back from a 10 day vacation and have 150-200 tomatoes on 3 plants. This year has been amazing for me.

I was just curious because I thought you sucker slicing tomatoes because they grow bigger fruit on the main vine. Large size is not really what you are looking for on cherry tomatoes so if there is not any benefit, less work for me, ha ha

I don’t cut suckers off any of my tomatoes. The size variance in the fruit is negligible and you’re making the plant vulnerable to disease

I prune them when they are small removing suckers. Once they are mature I let them be because a lot is your suckers will grow blossoms

Hell. Might try that as an experiment this year and not sucker any of the indeterminates.

I usually sucker my indeterminates. I don’t know if there’s any real advantage to doing it other than making it easier to tie down and secure on the stake. It’s just what I have always done. Determinate varieties I let them do whatever they want.

So I have a serious issue with my tomato plants in buckets. 7 of the 16 have yellow branches and one of the plants has a tomato with blossom rot. I put the Texas tomato food on them. They aren’t mature yet so I have time to fix it. I went ahead and bought osmocote and gave each plant some food. Also gave them some epsom salt. Hopefully they turn around. My peppers are doing awesome. Very strange the the toms are struggling.

I don’t prune my cherry tomatoes except for airflow. I sucker the indeterminates down to 1-2 main vines. I just feel like they get sick too easily to have vines and leaves everywhere.

That’s what I thought at first, but it looked too small. But I think you’re right. I actually just found a huge army worm in my herb box.
