It's way colder than I thought it was going to be.

Thanks for all the good info in the thread guys!
I am starting a garden this year for the first time since I was a kid (many years ago), and I am going to experiment with a raised garden. I think it will be 1'x 4'x 8'
I just have a couple of questions:
1) Is 12" deep enough?
2) Do y'all put landscape fabric beneath the raised bed?
3) I've been researching what kind of soil to put in the
bed. Does anyone have experience with the Miracle-Gro raised bed soil? If so, is that by itself sufficient for a good garden, or should I mix in some additives?
Thanks!

12” is deep enough, when I had raised beds I didn’t use fabric but you can and it’s a small area.
Miracle Gro is good just might be a bit expensive for that size. In BR you can buy a couple of scoops from Cleggs cheap.
Good luck. I removed my raised beds and am going to build rows.

This was mine last year
12” is plenty (TWSS)
Mine does not have landscape fabric. Wasn’t an issue
I put top soil, peat moss and composted cow manure in mine (all bags I bought). Then put the pine shavings out of our chicken coop in the garden. I will do that again as we had a bumper crop of vegetables last year.

I'm pretty new to gardening and I am planting green beans this year for the first time. Do yall use inoculant when planting the seeds and do you think it makes a difference?

My soil is Top Soil, Peat Moss, Compost & Manure, and kitchen scraps. My Green Bean seeds go straight in the ground. I'll be planting them Sunday.

Same.
Checked on the plants under the tent this morning. They appeared to be ok. Hopefully that continues for one more night.

Thanks for all the responses!
For the top soil, composted manure, and peat moss mixture, do y'all use each item in equal amounts?

I have 4' x 8' beds. If I had to guess it's 10 bag Top Soil, 10 bags Compost, and 1 bag Peat Moss. It comes in a large block. It may even be half a bag. I built them a few years ago. I just add Compost every year along with fertilizer, fish guts, and scraps.

Well, checked on the plants when I got home from work. I don’t think they’re gonna make it.

Starting mine soon. My oldest boy wants to plant blueberries and an apple tree. I’m doing the standard tomatoes, squash, okra, beans, and a few others. I need to borrow a tiller and bust it up good again. Took last year off with a new baby. I may put in some posts this year and make it raised beds to make it easy.

That sucks. Were any started from seed or did you buy transplants?
Posted on 3/5/19 at 8:49 pm to LSUlefty
All started from seed. I still have some extras. But not enough to replace all of them. I’ll have to go buy some.

It is very disappointing, isn't it?

Lots of frost this morning. I bet many lost their plants.

Teachable moment, I guess.
I've already started drawing up a "removable greenhouse" I guess would be the best way to describe it. Gonna use PVC and clear plastic sheeting. Something that will fit over my entire garden. And I'm going to put places to mount lights under it to provide heat. Something easy to set up, and just as easy to break down for storage.
That'll be for next year. But I'm gonna start gathering supplies and building it this year. This won't happen again.

It’s going down to 41 degrees here tonight. Will my plants, all of which are in pots, be safe to make it through? I have:
Two blueberry
Meyer lemon
Cherry tomato
Three jalapeño (young)
Strawberry
Bell pepper (young)
Thank you

Oh yeah. They'll be fine.
I had temps of 26 yesterday morning, and 29 this morning. My stuff (even though they were covered) didn't stand much of a chance.

Well, went to the big orange store during lunch and bought a few replacement plants.
Kinda feels like cheating. Oh well.
