The dude who built my house set up the audio in a bit if a weird way and I’m trying to figure out how to get it straightened out.
Currently there’s 1 receiver in the living room and 3 speakers inside and 3 outside under the patio. They’re all dual coil speakers. I was to go 2 zone and would prefer something that has app control since the Bluetooth range blows. Anyone have any recommendations? It’s a strange setup with 6 dual coil speakers and the zone being split 3 & 3.

I use Savant and love it. May be a bit overkill for your purpose but take a look

I have my 6 interior speakers hooked up to receiver for surround sound and purchase one of these for my 4 outdoor speakers. Works perfectly with fm or Bluetooth.

Why is it a strange setup? Sounds like a standard 2-zone setup with an odd ohm rating depending on how it’s wired. Do you know the impedance at the receiver? You can get a device that will impedance match your speaker load to your amp if you need to.

Other than that, a standard 2-zone amp should handle it just fine. If you wanted to wire it differently, you could also get a small amp and pair it with an input device. For example, I use a small Bluetooth amp and an Amazon Echo Dot as the input. I control the music from the Alexa app (or can send music to it from the Amazon/Spotify/etc app). It works well enough for me.

The impedance and the three speakers outside since most second zones are only two channel. Plus the dual coils. I don’t know the current impedance but I want to redo the receiver setup anyway so I can change it. The coils are 8ohm each.

Lots of routes you can go, depends on what exactly you want and what you want to spend.

You could get a new receiver that is dual zone and has built in airplay. Or get a cheaper dual zone receiver and use a Roku for Airplay to the inside + a Belkin Soundform dongle for airplay outside, or get dedicated receivers for each zone and make them AirPlay capable.

My system is simple - old Yamaha receiver for inside speakers and I use either my Roku Ultra or the Belkin Soundform for Airplay. Outside I have two Klipsch speakers and run them off a chi-fi amplifier with a Belkin Soundform for Airplay.

One thing with the Belkin, make sure to use the optical in/out. It has an aux in/out but I’ve read the sound levels are off with it.

I used the receiver to power my inside speakers and a heos amp to power my outside speakers. You could use the app to make both zones play the same thing or two separate things.

I got this Denon after a lightning strike fried my Yamaha receiver. It is perfect for my needs. I have 5 speakers in the living room for surround sound and 2 on the back patio. The Heos app lets me control each zone independently or I can have them synced.

I especially like that I can not only play different sources in the 2 zones, but also specifically change the volume in each zone even if they are playing the same thing. We typically have the patio speakers a bit louder when we are outside since the kids are playing, fans going, and other noise. If the zone volumes were locked, this would put the indoor speakers at an uncomfortable level.

We have an onkyo from Best Buy with 2 zones and haven’t had an issue. 5 speakers inside, 2 outside. Can play both zones together or shut off one and play the other via the app. Connect it to Spotify via airplay.

I came to post SONOS.

app to control everything
play from your music services
can always build/add to the existing system (soundbar/subwoofer) more portable speakers, etc.

This is the way.

I have speakers all over the house and two pairs on the patio. Because I never really want different music in different spaces at the same time, I used a simple impedance matching speaker selector. It mostly stays on patio and kitchen because I go back and forth between the two cooking and hanging out. I am using a very basic Pioneer receiver and it stays on all the time. I never see it and only have to turn it on about 3 times a year.

I like the idea of using that. but has a similar problem as most of the receivers that have 2 channel second zones.

Does anyone know how i would wire in 3 speakers (6 coils) to make sure i'm not running it at 2ohms and cook it?

You haven’t explained “dual coil speaker”
Do they have only one single full range driver each? There are a lot of dual coil drivers out there but having a full dual coil loudspeaker would yield additional filtering requirements and generally just not be something a sane person would design. Maybe the drivers are just wired individually meaning the active or passive filtering is missing? Send a model number and it’ll be easier to help.

Edit:
“dual coil” speakers for distributed systems typically means they are to be hooked to the left and right channels simultaneously to play combined mono. This makes sense because hi fidelity only works when the listeners’ positions are known. This is so easy to do with analog or digital signal processing that you’d have to be crazy to do the combining at the loudspeaker, but that is what is happening here. You need a 12 channel amplifier to have individual speaker control and use them as intended. They’re a dime a dozen used but if you want modern features, here is one:

Good point. Brand and model is Proficient C625TT
Installation manual shows two terminals per speaker, which jives with the amount of wires i see coming out of the wall.

I'm a bit rusty, on all this since my car audio days are long in the past.

See my edit above. Figured it out. You need a left and right channel to each speaker to work as intended. Any combining will sacrifice functionality. Just get correct amplifier and/or distribution system.
I’d stick with 6 zone system though as each of your dual speakers is its own zone. There are a ton on the market, I just linked first I saw, not a recommendation.

That great i appreciate it. I think that would give me the control i need to balance the sounds the way i want to.

If you want to save $1k you can find a used 12 channel amplifier for $100 or less then add a couple airplay2 or chrome cast adapters. Call one indoor and one outdoor. Most 12 channel amplifiers have dual inputs to make wiring clean and easy.
