I would just like to say, thanks for all the info, I think I get it now. I would have never dreamed the most stimulating thread I would create would be on a help topic about Germans. And the fact that my handle is "HugoStiglitz", makes it even better.
Before I posted this question, as an actual German, I was wondering if I should be offended by the use of the term "germans", since it was always seeming being associated with something negative or something to be ashamed of. No possibility of being offended now. Thanks guys!

Fourth, I think Putty has irrefutably refuted your source and methodology for determining the "etymology" of the word "Germans." Good day to you, sir.
Putty, I am well aware of the actual definition of the word "German." This is a thread about it's slang usage on Tigerdroppings. I don't think people are talking about the tribe of people who now inhabit modern Germany. Thanks for that source though.

Your argument has nothing to do with the development of the word "germans," only how you contend it is used as an idiom.
My argument is about the development of the word in this slang context. No literate person could possibly think I was talking about the first use of the word Germans in its formal sense.
Your Zoolander analogy is a strawman and you know it. I can show lots of examples where that phrase is used in the same context that predate Zoolander. You have shown me exactly zero earlier examples of where "Germans" is used in this context. Nor have you shown me any sources that define the terms as you do.

Putty.
Pssssst.
Putty.
[whisper]Do you think The King is still checking it every few days?[/whisper]

Best what does "germans" mean thread ever!
The Animal House reference never made sense to me because it has nothing to do with germans on here.
The holding back of information by Geobbles does though!

Could you have come up with a more bullshittier pile of bullshite. I'll give you credit for being creative, but no one in their right mind would buy such a load of pure, unadulterated bullshite!
Dude. Animal House came out over 30 years ago!!
Honestly I've been thinking that it was a reference to Animal House for years.

Do you ever get feeling you are a pair of brown loafers on Oscar night? That maybe you are not on the inside?

Yes, but most of you don't know the real reason why it is.

whoa, whoa, whoa...I get that you want to retroactively fabricate some significance in respect to the words of Blutarsky (who, by the way had a GPA of 0.0 so I question whether you ought to be giving him any credence at all), but DO NOT, in your blind allegiance to some abstract legacy of fratasticness, demean the contributions of Derek to the lexicon of modern verbiage.

I actually started a "what does Germans mean" thread years ago, and the explanation was Animal House..
