Couple reasons without searching to give you a better answer
Bloating will cause you to have less energy.
Lowered blood sugar during exercise will drain you even faster.

I don't see the need to completely rid yourself of carbonation. It's just air with water. It helps calm stomach issues as well and is delicious. I only drink maybe a can a day of coke zero.

Along the lines, people have forgotten what a "treat" was. My great grandmother had coke heavy for us always as a treat and it was one of those very tiny bottles of them. We absolutely could not have one all the time. I only have one with my lunch as a way to alleviate all the boring food I currently am on but I still drink my gallon of water a day.

My treat is if I haven't had at least 64oz of water, I can't have a coke.

Nothing wrong with that imo.

If op wants to wake up and have a coke zero, it's not that big of a deal.

Nothing wrong with your views on it at all, especially with the 64oz water rule. I just happen to find it beneficial to completely avoid it. JMO

How long does it take the pill to kick in? Just trying to time it for my morning workout. I'm in the gym within an hour after waking and I don't think taking it right before would be enough time. I suppose I could take it right when I wake.

C pills usually kick in pretty quick for me. You could probably take it on your way to the gym and feel it by the time you got there

Try iced coffee or cold brew. I drink it black from Starbucks all the time. If you get a large size and no ice it will last you a few days

subject pretty much says it all. black coffee is the obvious choice, but i can't stand any kind of hot coffee. i've tried to get into it many times and i just can't.

i have to wake up much earlier than i used to. most days im fine and i don't need a boost, but once or twice a week i need some help. is coke zero a terrible idea?

Mix a little instant coffee into your protein shake or plain milk/water. It dissolves in cold liquids as well as hot.

for folks with any orthostatic intolerance or for any other reason need a regular boost of eletrolytes, NUUN tablets that contain caffeine may be another option. It's only 40 mg but it's better than a coke. NUUN tablets also come in non-caffeinated form too.

Green Tea

I used to be a big advocate for Monster, pre-workout, etc but I'm seeing too many young guys coming in with arrhythmias and MI's r/t these supplements. I quit taking them all together.

I drink green tea regularly and it does the trick to get me up and going. Lipton diet green tea is really good, you can get a 12-pack at kroger for like $4. You can also make it yourself in which case I always do a large container of it with honey and citrus and keep it chilled.
