Tweaked My Back/Neck/Spine...?
This is long, apologies, but want to go into detail for you fitness detectives:

Alright so I have done something to upset my back. It is a sharp pain/stiffness at what I would call the base of my neck/upper back, right in the center along the spine. Kind of smack in between the scapulas.

The tightness is felt constantly, but there isn't really pain unless I'm tilting my head forward or backwards. Side to side/rotation doesn't hurt.

I've had similar tightness before (frequently, actually) but to a lesser extent, and have always attributed it to 'sleeping on it wrong'. Whatever that means. Usually goes away after a day. This time is much worse, however, and I can pinpoint the 'tweak' to when I was bench pressing on Tuesday (I've never felt this pain previously while benching). I was on my 7th rep of a set so it's not like I was overexerting myself on some weight I couldn't handle, but I was definitely in "fight through one more rep" mode. Half way through the rep I felt the area on my back tighten up. I was able to finish the rep, and the pain lingered for 10 minutes or so, but it lessened and I finished the workout (and the day) without any real pain or issue.

I woke up on Wednesday and the pain was back and worse, and has been progressively worse since then. I could barely sleep last night. Supposed to hit a back workout today but I'm debating that.

Now I'm trying to figure out the root cause here. Kind of what's the chicken and what's the egg. I've always considered my bench press form to be above average. Naturally, I'm hoping that I -am- doing something wrong when I'm sleeping, and the workout just amplified it this time. I often fall asleep in the position that is right now literally the most painful, but maybe that is just a coincidence. It's obvious this time that I tweaked it while benching, so I'm wondering if this is a common problem? Is there some bad form that can lead to this type of injury?

Or cervical radiculopathy. Does the pain go down an arm? Numbness to fingers?

Bench press to near failure probably had you exerting in a head forward position. Either raising your head or if you cheated even a hair and arched the back. You head stayed on the bench but your spine tipped forward.

Ice. Rest. Motrin. Add heat too in a day or so.

You sure you didn't tilt your head forward or back while benching or arching your back more than usual or what not?

I'm wondering if it's a facet joint. When I popped mine a few times, it hurt instantly and a "burning" feeling went through my body. I would be good to move the rest of the workout but when I was resting, it was much worse.

A chiro could help you if the issue persists.

Certainly possible. Was grinding out a rep so no guarantees the form didn't collapse. I know I didn't get crazy with it but I'm sure it wasn't perfect. Maybe scrunched my neck up kind of while keeping my head and shoulders on the bench, like mentioned above.

Nah, no pain or tingling extending down the arms or anything.

I'll ice it down and see if we can't get it better.

In terms of sleeping, for something like this would y'all rec propping myself up with a bunch of pillows, or trying to sleep really flat, like with no pillow? I tried to sleep on my back and stomach with my head on one pillow last night and that did not work at all.

Glad that you didn't feel any numbness, tingling, or other abnormalities like that.

Honestly I toss and turn and can crawl into a fetal position to sleep if I need to throughout the night whether I'm in pain or not so I can't give you a good answer

I've had similar pain in the area you are describing and it turned out to be a slight(grade 2) muscle tear. For the tightness I don't recall any before the injury happened, but it was there after it healed. I had some mobility issues i.e I couldn't do this stretch on the same side as pictured even after it was healed

I eventually worked it out. Whatever it is swallow your pride and don't lift until you get it figured out.

EDIT: My pain was a bit more constant and not just when I moved my head, though. I'd get it checked out for sure.
