What kind of riding (trail, road, etc.) and what’s your price range?

I bought a Trek 820 a couple years ago and like it. It’s one of their basic bikes but very versatile. I believe it’s around $400.

I assume $500 is my max right now - i don’t want to sink too many much in the beginning.

I live in Pensacola and so the extent of trails is about 50 Miles our by UWF but mostly roads . I’m looking probably a hybrid to do both

Pensacola seems like a great place to ride. Check out Facebook Marketplace once you decide what kind of bike you want. I’ve seen some good deals on cycling stuff there.

What does this mean? Flat trails? For $500 you should look at used bikes. I would recommend you save a little more and get a better new bike. Should be some nice riding around there.

Try a Giant hybrid. They are about that price point (before inflation). I've been pleased with mine and completed two sprint-triathalons with it.

I kept it and also recently bought a cervelo Road bike - but that's a good bit more than you're looking to start at.

Glad to see you making some healthy lifestyle choices.

REI's Co-op label is a good new starter bike. I hate the hassle of buying used stuff these days. You can get a nice hybrid w disc brakes, good Shimano components, and REI service for about $650. They just raised from $600. By the time you waste time searching and dealing with people, test riding, finding crap wrong with it, etc, for a used bike, you could make up for any savings on used with the ease of new w solid customer support.

I started riding about a year ago and like you didn’t want to jump in on an expensive bike and end up not liking it. I bought a $300 schwinn hybrid from academy. I do anywhere from 20-40 mile rides and other than a few blown tires, haven’t had any mechanical issues. I will probably upgrade to a higher end bike eventually but I feel it’s held up well and if I wouldn’t have enjoyed it, I didn’t have a ton invested.
Make sure to get some padded bike shorts if you’ve never ridden a bike for long periods of time.

I started riding strictly for exercise about 4 years ago, I bought a Schwinn mountain bike st Goodwill for $35, then spent around $80 for a set of tires with street tread. According to my $12 bike computer I’ve put a little over 5000 miles on it. There’s really need to spend a lot of money until you find out if bike riding is a form of exercise that you like, and will stick with.
