So I started trying to work squats into my routine. Background: 51 year old, long-time triathlete, retired from that due to some cardiac issues. Been lifting instead about a year now.

I know I'm supposed to get to parallel, but can't come close. Beginning to think that being weak results in bad form, and bad form results in staying weak. Or maybe its a flexibility issue, I don't know.

what else should I do/try to get there?

Couple of things you can try. Stand with toes straight and then squeeze your butt. Your toes will flare out to where they need to be. After that, when you decend, track your knees over your toes and keep them in line.

You could also use some 5lb plates under your heels and try out a lighter weight. If that gets you to parallel, it's an ankle mobility issue.

Low Bar Squat

This video has helped me a lot. Used to never get parallel, especially as the weight got heavier. But, now, I have no problem getting parallel, and even below parallel. It also helped with the lower back pain I'd experience from squats because my technique was shite.

Try squatting in a swimming pool where gravity is pretty much negated.. just to work on a full range of motion

How much are you stretching?

Joe Rogan had a really good podcast with David Goggins the other day. He’s a former Navy SEAL/triathlete/ultramarathon runner. He went into something similar. He discovered that his muscles were tightening and shortening due to the years of stress.

Said he couldn’t lift or squat without excruciating pain. He took up hot yoga and lots and lots of stretching and eventually fixed the problem.

Can you do an air squat properly? Meaning squaring below parallel, heels remaining on ground, chest upright.

If not, I’m thinking it’s probably a mobility thing. The weakest of weak should be able to properly air squat

Was gonna say the same thing. Air squats, empty bar squats... don't worry about loading up the bar if you can't complete proper reps. Get stronger the right way. Good luck!

Definitely agree with the others about air squats. Also work in good mornings, regular and straight leg deadlifts. Start with really light weight and work up from there.

A lot of running could be causing the tightness. Possible your hips aren't letting you sink in. Start stretching at night. No before your workouts.
