Need to be careful taking all these over the counter supplements. My wife is Nurse Practitioner and I read her journals,I have read several articles about otc supplements.Problem is there is no standardization of doses, for example-10 brands of ginkgo were tested,3 brands had absolutely no ginkgo in them, the other brands had varying amounts. One article was about red rice yeast, the active ingredient is itself a statin, the levels were all over the charts, from almost none to toxic amounts. There have been several documented cases of liver failure from people taking red rice yeast.
Another problem is there are all kinds of stuff in these otc supplements that shouldn’t be in them, such as lead and various other chemicals.A lot of this stuff is made in China,as is a lot of prescription drugs-scary to me.

All of my supplements are made here in the USA. I take red yeast rice for my high LDLs, as I REFUSE to take a Rx statin. The brand I have is also 3rd party tested. It's not some cheap crap you get at the grocery store. I'm also aware that RYR can deplete CoQ10 from the body, which is why I supplement with that as well.
And no offense, but most NPs, PAs, and MDs don't know anymore about nutrition, exercise, and supplementation than the general public, as very little education on those topics is introduced in their years of training.

I absolutely agree that NPs,PA,s and Md,s know little about nutrition, where I got my information was from NP scientific journals, also Consumer Reports has had several articles about supplements. The sad fact is the medical profession has little interest in nutrition and disease prevention. After all, there is no money to be made in prevention. The money is in prescribing, treatments, procedures, etc. One can not even trust nutritional information that comes from American Heart Association or American Cancer Society because of the financial support they receive from the food industry. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that controls education and licensing of dietitians in US receives significant funding from food industry,i.e. Coca-Cola,Kellogg’s,General Foods, etc. You can be sure the information they put out is biased. If anyone has interest in researching this, there are two books-“Food Politics” and “Unsavory Truth ”,both by Marion Nestle(no connection to Nestle company)
Back to supplements, are you sure the red rice yeast is manufactured in US,not sourced from China and formulated in US.For your sake I hope it isn’t.

It has been shown to improve your HDL/LDL ratio. Some statins even have RYR as a base active ingredient in them. However, RYR can help cholesterol without many side effects associated with Rx statins, which is why I recently started taking it.
But LSUA75 is right in that you have to be careful where you get it from. I don't go crazy on the dosage, and still take care with my eating and training.

Vitamin industry is completely phony. This is coming from a Ph.D (not me). It will only give you expensive urine. I used to take fish oil and ginkgo biloba then realized I was just wasting money.

I take prescription fish oil for HDL and triglyceride benefit. I take no supplements over the counter because the lack of FDA regulation means I can never know what I’m taking.
And FTR, OTC fish oil is generally a bad idea. It ends up getting oxidized due to high storage temperatures.
