Wife and I are thinking about getting a treadmill. Will consider anything around $1,000

I'd lean towards an elliptical over a treadmill.

A $1,000 treadmill is probably a bad investment if both of you plan on using it for an extended period of time.

Buy a used commercial model. Look at superfitness used equipment. Home models are crap.

I bought a sole 83 for $200 second hand. Retails over 2G.

That night I got offered a free Motus treadmill.
Retails at 7G. So I need to go get the free one lol!

Yea you do, home treadmills tend to have slippage issue especially when running or if you are a bigger guy. Personally I think the only thing a treadmill is good for is inclined walking, other then that why not go run or walk outside? I mean maybe if it's raining I could see it but most of us live in south Louisiana, its beautiful(but hot as frick) 9 months out of the year.

That's mainly because people don't maintain it like a gym does and don't lubricate it. I got a cheap dicks sporting goods treadmill they had as a display and they lubricated it and I can run on it fine. It's like a 2.5 CHP motor.

I would go with a good stair climber. You'd burn way more calories and get your heart rate up alot faster
