I exercise about an hour a day, mostly cardio. I have a job that keeps me active. I eat a low carb (not keto) diet and 5 days a week eat one meal a day. Usually eat fish at least 3 times a week. I can’t seem to get my HDL above 30. Anybody got ideas how to raise it beyond what I’m already doing?

FYI, I tried fish oil pills for a year and they didn’t do anything. Also for the record I’m 5lbs overweight according to BMI charts, I’m working on losing it, but I can’t imagine that being the issue.

Cook with olive oil.

Stick with whole grain breads and pasta as much as possible. That pasta plus is actually pretty good. It's much more palatable than the whole wheat pasta.

As mentioned, oats for breakfast will help if you like them and don't need a lot of protein in your diet.

Eat sardines in olive oil for a snack 2-3 days a week. I don't know what you are doing for cardio, but staying aerobic for most of that time will probably have more of an affect on your cholesterol.

Olive oil, olive oil, olive oil.

Seriously.

I had my HDL as high as 120 once when I was consistent with those things and training for a marathon.

I’m assuming that the downvotes don’t like olive oil, because if they are downvoting because they don’t believe the things I posted work, then they are morons.

No, its the smoke point that is the problem. There are better options for cooking. I love olive oil for salads and lower temp cooking.

So, they want to deep fry and have good cholesterol. I think you are right. That’s hilarious too.

Now we have the OIL POLICE up in here, watch out all ye who cook!

He said “ cook” not deep fry with olive oil you fricking moron - where did he say he was going to cook above 350 to 410 degrees?. You probably downvoted my fish oil recommendation too.

Well, this turn ugly

So, I guess I’ll just drink some olive oil every day for a few months and see if that works.

I already eat the sardines, I was draining off the olive oil to reduce the calories. Someone mentioned fish oil pills, but as I said I was taking them for a year and they didn’t move the needle at all.

I’m a little leery about increasing carbohydrates, as I was diagnosed with a fatty liver a year ago and have reduced my triglycerides over 300% since by reducing carbohydrates. I’m convinced a low carb diet is what is best for my metabolic health at this point. So, I would like to find a an HDL solution that doesn’t involve me raising carbohydrates if possible.

How much did you take? Did you check the EPA/DHA per serving? Did you start dosing at 4 grams combined EPA/DHA?

You are what you are. Get on a healthy diet you can reasonably sustain. Take 25 grams of soluable fiber a day. Get blood work. Once your numbers stabilize, take medication accordingly. My HDLs are around 100. I have no clue why.

Rarely, I’ll drink on vacation or on holidays. Those times would be like a six pack on things like the 4th of July or a mixed drink at dinner on vacation.

Trig:hdl is the only HDL proxy I care about.

So focusing on lowering trigs makes most sense.

I'm 1:1ish usually so don't think about it

almonds every day and high intensity exercise helped me go from upper 30’s to upper 50’s.

LDL was still high though
