It's not for me but someone close to me was recently prescribed this. From what I can tell it's an appetite suppressant/stimulant, but I've heard people call it legal meth. What are the side effects and do you think it's safe?

Quick search shows it's Phentermine. Years ago, if you are old enough, they had a hugely successful weight loss drug nicknamed Fen-Phen. They eventually banned it because of the negatives ( heart rate, blood pressure) and people just being people and misusing it because of the amphetamine side effects. The is the Phen side of that drug. I have no doubt you friend would lose weight but I'd bet a fully funded Roth IRA it would be relatively short lived. Taking off the weight can be difficult but keeping it off, effortlessly, is impossible without discipline, effort, planning, hard work.

I dated a girl in college that was on that, and it turned her into a nymphomaniac. It also made her batshit crazy, but I think she was already that way without it. Her mom got it for her from some shady doctor.

The sheer definition of "profit"?

The reason it was prescribed is because she's actually going through the process that leads up to weight loss surgery, I've tried to talk her out of it till I'm blue in the face but I can't get through to her. Maybe with the medication and the overall discipline that comes with a lifestyle change it might change her mind.

I'd get her to ask the doctor to prescribe a mild anti-depressant at the same time. Those amphetamine derivatives can wreak havoc on your mental psyche, and I'm guessing she might have some self esteem issue over her weight. Keep a close eye on her behavior once she's on it. She may not even realize the mental/behavioral changes.

I worked with a dude on Adipex. He would get real skinny and go off of it. Six months later he would have put all of the weight back on and do it again. He finally started using other drugs, turned in to an addict, and then quit and moved away.
