Yesterday's 11 mile run felt absolutely horrible, 11 miles 900ft elevation gain, 9:00min/mi pace

Like, I was somewhat tempted to take today off thinking my body was just not ready to jump back into it:

Then I drop this and felt like flippin' Superman during it. WTF?!?!

P.S: I'm starting to believe the science that is coming out that shows carbon shoes aren't great to wear on a daily basis. I don't wear Carbon shoes, but the Speeds do have Nylon, and boooy do I felt so much better when I'm running in them than any other shoe

It's awful for you on a daily basis. Wearing them for a race is fine, but it's cheating your body if you use them long term. Here's a discussion regarding the specific shoe you have:
Endorphin speed 3 as daily?
If you're looking for a lightweight daily trainer, there are a lot of options, including your Speed 3s. I use the NPegasus 39 right now as my daily trainer. I'll move over to the Invincible 3 if I'm just not feeling great on a 5-6 mile day, or I'll use it for some light speedwork/tempo work. If I'm doing intervals between 400-2000 I'll swap over to my Pegasus Turbo.

Hell if you can get out there and put out something better than you originally though, good on you!

It’s still the foams that provide the benefit, the plates just provide stability and rigidity. I think it’s not recommended to run in carbon daily bc they are so stiff, but some people need a stiff shoe. It really varies from person to person. I think rotating, regardless of the shoe, is most important.

That's actually a great thread, glad you linked to it because it confirmed some information I've been looking for, specifically:

quote:

there's no getting around the fact that a nylon plate (or hardened rubber) is not the same as a carbon plate, implementation matters, and it's doubtful that a nylon plate will be a detriment to your progress.

I still have a pair of Altra Torins I usually do my "mid week easy" run in just for this reason. to "Change things up" - my Sunday Recovery run is also in a very different shoe than the Speeds as well, but I did my run yesterday in them and they felt horrible (though it was 11 miles and the longest I've ever run in them was 6)

Hoooo it got warm on my lunch run today. My watch showed an insane HR that I figured to be cadence lock after I finished. I knew it felt worse, but not "180bpm on an easy run" worse

20 miles

Agreed on the rotating. Right now I’m running easy and treadmill runs in Saucony Triumphs, tempo and long runs in Saucony Endorphin Speed 3s, intervals/speedwork in Saucony Endorphin Pro 2s, with the Vaporfly 3s for race day. It’s worked well for me.

Ordered a pair of Nike Zoom Fly 5s to replace my Endo Pro 2s as they’re at the end of their useful life. These are also plated, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they are for intervals/speedwork.

I skipped my long run this morning... trying to figure out if I want to do one tomorrow or just call this week a loss. The Spartan race took it out of me more than I expected, not gonna lie, still glad I did it though.

I've got 2 weeks in a row of 20+ mile runs and 50+ mile weeks... just leaning towards taking the L

Just ended up taking the weekend off. Sometimes as a runner you don't want to listen to your body and want to just keep going because you think a week off will kill your progress and I just have to remind myself it's a croc-pot and not a microwave. (It's a long process of getting better incrementally with consistency) If anything I will now hit the next two peak weeks with energy and health and it will end up being 500x more useful than had I not listened to my body.

ETA: just a reminder it's the rest that makes you stronger, not the runs

yea i had to remind myself that yesterday. was going to go run 8 to make up for an off day i had to take on tuesday to take care of dad duties. Felt great and probably couldve done it but reminded myself just becuase i feel like i can doesnt mean i should.

Adjusting this week to be more easy mile focused. Got a baby 10 x 1 min on 1 min off fartlyk into my run this morning and will get a hard day wednesday. Outside of that its all easy/moderate miles this week. Aiming to get 66-70 in.

First interval run in 2 weeks, my goal was to do 5 1 mile sub 7:30 intervals:

I honestly thought I had failed when I finished, was surprised to see that I had pulled it off.

This one hurt and forced me to almost instantly stop the second I was done with the mile after the 2nd... the loop I was doing had about 85ft of elevation gain that came on one hill and the rest on a .3 mile section at like 1.5% grade. The 1.5% grade ended up being the section I was gritting my teeth before by the end

10 Miles consistent today:

Still feeling some muscle fatigue from the Spartan, but running through that fatigue should be good training for the Marathon right?!

ETA: my stretch goal would be to get under a 3:40 marathon this time... if the weather permits it would be cool to get close to 3:30 but I'm not holding my breath for a late April hilly marathon at 3:30 - being able to hold these paces the day after a workout tells me I'm close to the 3:30... just wish I chose better on Marathons

I’d say your line of thinking is right in terms of pacing. You seem ready to roll.

Eh all you can do is prepare yourself for what’s ahead now.

Next year you should hit grandmas. Getting into Duluth at the end of June from the south is heaven. it was mid 90s the day we left Wichita last year. Stepped out the car in Wisconsin to 50 degree weather.

Todays workout

Mile warmup
2 mile (10:50)
2 x mile (5:19, 5:16)
2 mile (10:59)
3 mile cooldown

Wanted to do another 2 x mile after the second 2 mile but my hammy started tweaking some so figured it was best to wrap it up.

Making great progress!! I’ll suggest if you want to feel confident in getting close to the 3:30 goal go knock out a 15 miler at true goal pace. Running 8:30ish for 10 miles after a “workout” day is a measuring stick but is stilll a long way from 8:00 for 26.

Kind of happy I winded down my season after the St. Patrick's Day race. My hamstring and IT band have been tweaked ever since, I would've been forcing myself to run through it for the CCC. Baby will be here soon so I'm taking it easy until then, maybe throwing in a tempo during the week, then learning how to fit in runs while I'm awake once the boy is born

First month you'll be learning how you can fit a nap into your life. We tried juggling gym and baby watching time but first 2 months was spent mostly recovering from being up every few hours.

I might do that 1st week of taper (in 2 weeks), could definitely see that being a confidence boost.

Long Run today because of my running frans going out of town this afternoon and I was off work so why not:

Tomorrow I will do my 5 miles with 3 miles of tempo. (or I might just do 5 miles tempo to really get to the 20% workout load)

This will be the first time I've ever done a workout the day after a long run, it should be pretty humbling I think
