Great race man, how’d it go?
Thanks, guys. Well, it was a slog. A 50k that started at 7:00 last night. About 3,600 feet total elevation. I had some real lows on the front half of this race. Probably my worst race experience to date. It wasn’t the race - good people, good race. I just had a bad mental attitude early on . This wasn’t a goal race for me. I signed up as a training run and for the experience - it’s a race a lot of trail runners in this area do and have good things to say about. But the heat index was 102 at the start. My stomach didn’t want any nutrition. It got dark and my headlamp strap was broken when I pulled it out of my pack. My HR monitor broke. I was getting passed by old ladies on walkers (it felt that way at least). My brain was just telling me I didn’t need to be out there, that this was stupid, and to drop. My goal at about mile 10 was just to get to the halfway turnaround and bow out. Then for some reason I started feeling better about 13. The humidity and heat dropped, and I was able to turn it around a little bit. I started to just enjoy the solitude of the woods at night. The back half went fine, and I passed a lot of people on the way back. I was glad I stuck it out. My buddy and I decided this was probably a one-time race for us. But glad I did it once, and it’s in the books. Now it’s on to the Chicago marathon in October. Will prob find a half to run in September or so to tune up.

Been 6 years since I ran a half and I signed up for Houston in January.
I am slow so right now I am prepping for a 10k on Labor Day weekend (not a real race just as a benchmark). I want to run that under 60. Then build towards the half
I ran a hot and humid 4 miles yesterday

You picked a terrible time of the year to start back up

I have been casually running. Did a 5k In April but I wanted to be in good shape before the meat of marathon training.
The interval stuff has been miserable lately but I should be cruising once the temps get reasonable

I have a chance to finish summer/ pre-marathon training strong , set 5K and 10K PRs, and aggressively reset my marathon training paces.
I have two tune up events before my 9/14 training starts and I'm going to train hard to hit these:
8/3 5K: under 24:30 (1:15 PR)
8/31 10K: sub 50:00

Sounds like you are about the same pace as myself. Set a 5K PR in May (23:40). Still working on that 10K below 50:00. My best right now is ~51.
I'm in week 4 of my marathon plan and I've been focusing on long and slow.

long and slow
I need to focus more in that area. My training runs are too fast and I need to fix it before I get hurt or over trained. It’ll help with recovery too. Can’t race fast if I’m to damn tired to run.

Same here for the most part, although I'm currently running about half of your weekly mileage.

Long and slow is the way to go. You have to swallow your pride a little at first, but it does wonders for your health. I would have gotten hurt long ago on my current plan if I trained how I did previously.

I go out on my long runs and aim for 1-1.5 mins/mile more than my expected marathon pace (10:00/mile). I always go faster though.
My mid week runs are at 4am so I just focus on negative splits on those.

Hope everyone is able to enjoy the "cool" front today. Get those fast times in while you can!!

Oh hell yeah! Actually “slept in” a little today until 5:30 as I wasn’t worried about beating the sun up.
My mid week Q session happens to be 8 easy today instead of a speed/track workout but it would have been nice to do some speed work in this weather as opposed to the July norm. Anywho, gonna enjoy 8 easy today and 7 tomorrow while soaking up this fall-ish weather.

Got 6 in this morning. Going to get a few more in this afternoon when I take the kids Pokemon hunting.

Today is my off day. Gonna miss out on those mid 60 temps. But I see tomorrow morning still looks favorable.

On the subject of running easy. My easy pace per my training plan (based on my race times of 19:15 5K & 41:00 10K) is 7:58-8:47. I had 8 easy on the schedule today and decided I was gonna cruise along near the slower end of easy pace. Well after a few miles my HR was up near 160 and my form was just shite and felt clunky. Just not fun. Decided I’d pick up the pace on the back end of the run. I did and no elevation in HR, form/economy, etc got better, cadence improved and it just felt fun.
No surprise that form/cadence improve at a quicker pace, but I also had no negative physiological affects to speak of either.
I get the idea of running easy and obviously it’s backed by science, etc but just not sure I will be slugging along near 9:00 pace anymore. I just don’t see the point as it sucks and I feel like it’s hurting my form/turnover/economy more than helping anything.
Just kind of torn on if this is a good idea or not but I think I’ll stick to the quicker end of my easy pace from now on and/or go by feel.

It’s my first plan going easy most of the time. I’m gonna put a lot of stock on how I perform on race day. Should be interesting.

TigeRoots,
That's the main reason I'm running as hard as I can in my last two events before full training--> I need more aggressive training paces for my new goals
The standard calculators currently put me around 10:40-11:17 for anything over 5 miles. If I try that I feel like I'm trying to use my foot as a brake to slow down and wreck my form.
Due to work, I'm running in midday heat with a 4+ pound hydration pack and I'd still have to walk to get to 10:40 pace.
After seeing this conversation develop, I'm going to switch to "feel" until I get faster events and paces on the books.
