Hi guys

I’m a 44-year-old male who is in great health. I wasn't very careful the last two days of our all-inclusive last week in Mexico and was eating fruit and veggies and salad from the buffet and sushi the last night. The next afternoon I had bad diarrhea for 2 days and felt miserable. I took pepto every few hours and by Friday I was having solid BMs. I never threw up or had fever, just chills and stomach aches/pain and diarrhea.

It’s been 10 days and I still feel 80-85%. My stomach is always gargling and I'm always burping. Im eating ok but spicey food is messing me up. Also, when i have to go, i have to go, i imagine it's what IBS feels like.

Im a runner and now when I run i feel like im going to poop my pants at any second.

Any tips are appreciated. Im assuming i got E coli or some bacteria and im wondering how much longer until it passes or if I need to start taking a probiotic or fermented foods to speed things along. What about getting an antibiotic?

I just want this feeling to go away. My anxiety has been through the roof as well. I guess it’s part of the gut brain connection

I would strongly recommend a two or three day water fast. Hell, even a one day fast should help. Tons of info available on YouTube.

I had too many bushwackers in Cancun years ago until I asked myself where they got their milk. I had straight liquid shits for days after.

I agree with the post above. Try a full 24 hour fast with water and coffee only if needed and let things reset a bit.

The only thing you would need an antibiotic is if you have H Pyloria/SIBO etc...but you would be able to take a test for that. Give it another week and try and eat a somewhat bland diet with plenty of fiber, if it's still like that you can ask your Gastro what he recommends.

Go to the doctor. You could have a parasite.

I will say I didn’t eat much for 3 days. Less than 500 calories total

I had tons of liquids and Gatorade zero. I didn’t have much left in my body

I'm going on day #9 of being in Vietnam, and on day #6(it began, mid day, right as I was finishing my first workout here), I came down with "non specific traveler's illness" with the same symptoms as you.

Symptoms wise, I think I'm fully clear of whatever it is now, so I think you being 10 days post infection and still feeling it says you should go get a script for some abx most likely.

With the GI symptoms you're having, if you don't regularly take probiotics, I wouldn't start now. I just wouldn't introduce anything new dietary wise until a physician assessed you. If they say no need for antibiotics then go the dietary route. I'm still gently advancing myself through a "bland diet" towards my baseline diet, it's only been 4 days for me, and I'm done with this bullshite, so I know you're probably double sick of feeling sick. But don't rush yer guts, they'll rebel and just punish you more.

I would see a doctor at this point to make sure you didn’t contract something that you need an antibiotic for.

Your gut microbiome is probably out of whack imo. Try adding fermented foods like ACV, kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, etc. and see if it helps. I’m not a doctor and haven’t stayed in a holiday inn recently. Just my two cents.

I’d probably hit the doc first. I’m not big on antibiotics but since it’s still giving you issues 10 days later you don’t want that kind of thing to get worse.

I’d hit the probiotics post antibiotic.
