Anyone in here routinely go to therapy? I listen to Howard Stern and he’s always talking about going to therapy. I’ve never been but the older I get the more I wonder if I’m missing out of some mental health cleaning by going to a therapist.

I'm currently seeing a therapist to help me deal with the intense stress from my dad's mental illness and helping care for him. I usually go once a month, more frequently in times of crisis.

My work has an EAP (employee assistance program). I can get several sessions paid for by my EAP(usually 8 free sessions for each issue I'm addressing with my therapist). Maybe see if your employer offers something similar if you are interested in going.

I go every Monday. At first it was to help me with binge eating. Now I just enjoy talking and thinking through things that are going on around me.

I don't have family or many friends out here so it gives me a chance to walk through ideas with someone who will give me some unbiased opinions.

I used to go. It definitely gives a different perspective on things. They did recommend a diet to me, though, at the time i didn't realize the effect of food on the brain so I never did ask about it. They can provide a number of mental tools to help.

I am my employer and I know that we don't give our employees that benefit!

How long have you been seeing your therapist?

About a year. He’s an older gentleman and just awesome. He’s really helping me set boundaries with my dad.

My insurance has behavioral health coverage. So it’s a $40 copay for each therapy season.

So you would need to see if your insurance covers therapy. Otherwise it is like $100-150 each hour session.

Not routinely, but I’ve gone when dealing with some stressful life moments. It’s a good way for me to sort of organize my thoughts about a situation and think more clearly. Gets expensive, though.

It took years to find a good therapist. Started at 17 because of substance abuse and depression. Would go years without it. When my wife had severe postpartum depression and i had to take 4 months of work off to care for them, i broke down. My therapist was crucial in working through that. Now i see him about 4 times a year. He retired but is kind enough to see me

I went when I was younger(17-19) to a guy bc of my drinking (I quit drinking at 22, 39 now). However when I finally got sober from everything I went to AA mtgs for a year and it was like free therapy. Now I do a lot of meditation. I researched it and have gotten to a great place with my practice and as a result of it. It is really healthy the more self aware you are and it makes you even more self aware, however if you struggle greatly with self awareness I think some professional help initially would be more beneficial.

It’s a great place to vent and air your dirty laundry without your SO, friend, or mistress post everything on social media.

I went to a few sessions to support a family member and loved it. Went a few times by myself and found it very relieving.
