Anybody try a higher fat and lower carb approach while ultra running? Zach bitter practices this some and hits the carbs while racing and harder effort runs. I’ve been thinking about trying it on my long runs.

That is totally dependent on your body

Some people do it and absolutely wreck themselves

Some it works great but like you said close to an actual race they increase the carbs

I always eat a high carb meal on Friday nights before my long Saturday run.

Not sure about an ultra. When it comes to marathons, most experts will tell you to increase carbs the week of the marathon, not just the night before.

Check out Zach's Human Performance Outliers Podcast. Also, Dr. Shawn Baker is a world class athlete that practices carnivore. Timothy Olsen had some pretty good success with low carb and ultra running but has kind of fallen off the map the last couple of years.

I've made a couple of attempts at combining low carb with ultra running with bad results. However, this summer seems to be clicking and I'm running with a lot more energy. Also, not having cramping issues like during past attempts. I'm aiming to stay low carb and run Dinosaur Valley 100 in November.

Foot in mouth

I totally missed that and it looks like it had good coverage by iRunFar.

Ha. My back (and other old things) is out of ultra territory. But I still run fasted a lot, do sorta OMAD, and mostly low carb/carb cycle.

My first ketone ester (Ketone Aid) experiment went well yesterday. I'll report back after the Snowbowl 15k Sat. Doing to fasted w ester.

Zach is a freak of nature and doesn't look particularly healthy. I don't see how he does those 100milers on a track. I'd go nuts.

This isn't a great podcast or anything, but I came across it when researching Ketone Aid. Interview with founder. He's pretty interesting.

The thing with low carb is dehydration, and I’ve noticed I can’t perform long endurance without the carbs. Carbs hold so much water in the body, which is why you lose so much weight in those early days going into ketosis, as the glycogen is burned off, it’s dependent water is shed. Add extreme sweating and you just cramp up a lot quicker…

I run with a Salomon hydration vest and if it's long and I can't refill I use the two auxiliary bladder bottles in front. I also take Salt Stick before and during long runs esp if hot at all.

I've been doing low carb for about 5 years now so I've learned to manage hydration.

Of course elite runners don't want to carry the weight of all that water. I'm just out for enjoyment and fitness, and the vest keeps you cool.

Eta: I also like to run by mtn rivers and creeks, so I'll often take a little Sawyer instead of the heavy crap.

I appreciate all the input. I’m shooting for my first 100miler this fall. Got several 50k—100k under my belt. I’ve played with the low carb high fat on runs 10 miles and less. Anything close to 20 I pound the carbs pre, mid and post run. I can tell when I’m depleted. Those fast sugars mid run are like jet fuel haha

So if you know carbs help you perform better why are you dead set on running on low carbs?

I’m never dead set on anything. I analyze everything trying to perform better. I’ve noticed with carbs and quick increase in performance with a quick drop off. I’ve also had my blood sugar drop some after consuming bananas with peanut butter. Always trying to learn and I prefer to learn from “average joes” bc that’s what I am....just and average ultra runner....at 240lbs haha
