deep trauma mining - to attack root causes and not just symptoms (which is what alcohol abuse is - a symptom).
Whatever way you wish to find the deep down reason(s) of why you (myself) choose to drink in excess is up to the person struggling with alcohol and or drugs. For me, drowning in booze was/ sometime still is a way to hide or suppress insecurities, false beliefs about myself and even some trauma in my past.
ETA: sometimes I feel it's easier to run away from those and drink way too much to not have to feel. Ultimately, its doesn't work and end up worse off than before I drank, but I digress... The alcoholics in this thread will probably relate in some way

How’d you make it through the holiday? You still desire to be sober?
Posted on 11/25/22 at 11:09 am to pwejr88
Made it through yesterday with no problems. Sure, I'd have loved a nice glass of Bourbon last night, but I was never tempted.
I guess the withdrawals never came because I haven't felt like crap even though I was drinking every day until I passed out.
Weird.
Still feeling good though.

Man that’s great to hear! Well done! One day at a time. That’s all you have to get through without a drink.
Withdrawals are different for everyone and your brain will feel them even if you can’t. Most come from years of chronic alcohol abuse. I myself never had bad symptoms. Just foggy thinking for a while until my memory and thinking improved.
I’m happy for you! Nice job making it through without a drink. You now have faith.
“Hope” is seeing something in others you hope to achieve. When it starts happening to you that hope turns into “faith.” You’ve overcome some big events already and stayed sober. You can have faith in yourself that you’ll do the same for the next event.

Despite the colossal failures by both LSU and the Saints this weekend I somehow managed to stay sober.
Two weeks down!!

Only other alcoholics can truly appreciate how big of a deal that actually is.

If I would’ve drank after the LSU loss, sunday morning would’ve sucked three times as bad.
Congrats on two weeks! Keep it up and watch the blessings flow in.

That’s awesome. Keep it up.

Hey man how’s it going?
Are you still stringing some sober days together in unison?

Yessir.
Feel great, too.
Yesterday afternoon sucked for obvious reasons, but I made it through.

Your sobriety date 11/11?.. so a week away from 1 month sober?

I do not recommend counting days for reasons mentioned above. A week away from anything is a minute away from the opposite.
This is my biggest issue with AA. Maybe he had a drink tonight. So he has to start over. Bullsheet.

hey Big Scrub...I understand how you feel about AA, you have made that pretty clear. That is not what this thread is about.
if you want to discuss that validty of AA then take it to the OT in a seperate thread. This thread is about 1 guy and him trying to just make 10 days without a drink. no matter how he does it, its a big deal to him.
rememeber the 1st time you made it 2 weeks without carbs and got into deep ketosis...it was a big deal.
10 days without a drink for some is an even bigger deal. nobody gives a frick how he does it, if its optimal, best way etc.....just about getting it done and apparently him talking about it here is a great outlet and helping him along.
stop derailing the fricking thread.

wanted to say pretty awesome man. keep it up. I used to drink real heavy in my early to even mid 20s and just decided to stop so much. still have one about once a month but i was never addicted and can stop after 1 but i understand the peer pressure and how it can be a pain in the arse.
couple things...i would suggest you get really into fitness...for some reason the focus on fitness goals, especially body comp and lifting goals and how alcohol can cause set backs...tends to help people deal with everything and it seems to be a very good outlet for stress.
also for sleeping, not sure if you want to add anything but would rather you do than relapse. For sleeping i recommend really good sleep hygeine, minimizing blue light, really cold and dark room and if needed melatonin.
melatonin does not down regulate normal production so no need to worry about issues if you decide to stop and it actually can be healthy for you to take.
i cant help as much as some of the others, but if there is anything you ever need or just need to talk

The way AA and other ‘peer groups’ work is sharing your experience with others. Keeping track of your days without a drink will directly give someone else hope that they can do it also.
If you have a drink after some sobriety, no, you do not lose all the knowledge you’ve learned and the memories of feeling good but you do reset your sobriety date. The reason AA gives out chips is because there is significant scientific healing in the brain at about each 30 day mark. After a year it slows down.

Totally agree. Exercise helped me get through the first year without drinking. I guess I cross-addicted but I put down the booze and picked up the weights and my life skyrocketed into awesomeness.

I agree and wasn’t really clear. In my experience people that OBSESS over days are setting themselves up for letdowns.

Preaching to the choir. The 18 month chip is a big one. So many drop off after a year. It’s one of the bigger indicators for long term success. But this dude, and all of us, really just need to be concerned with today…as you well know.

Yep! I wish I would’ve quit drinking so much sooner. I had no idea how much fun life would be without drinking and couldn’t really fathom it at the time. I just trusted those that did before me and went on hope that it could happen for me.
