Help me set a realistic goal

I am currently at 209.5 lbs and I want to get down to 185. The weight loss is realistic but what I need help with is a real time frame. I am not going to be doing any thing extreme, just eating healthier and working out. How long should this take? I like to set a target date to hit or else I will tend to be less discipline in my diet and workout schedule.

I would think you could be able to hit that mid summer pretty easily
probably early summer if you were really strict with your diet and work outs
I guess it just really depends on how strict you are going to be and how many "cheat" days you allow yourself

Without any specific program you're following or idea how much of your current weight is excess, no clue.
If you're doing well with programming diet and exercise, the amount of excess weight you have is a huge deal.
If a relatively ripped weight for you would be 155, you can do it a lot faster than if you think 185 will be a relatively ripped weight.

It depends on your BMI. The more excess fat you need to lose, the faster it will come off with improved diet and exercise. A pound a week is a realistic general goal, but if you are like 60 pounds overweight, you could lose 2 or even 3 a week for the first couple of months depending on how aggressive you are with the changes.

So I would say 185 is relatively ripped weight. I do not want to go any lower because I think it would be way too skinny.

8-9 months to a year.
Dropping that much weight to a low bf is difficult. I will say most people underrate how much they have to lose to get ripped.

He could probably get the first half off in 2 months but the latter half would take at least double that IMO

I went from 225 to currently 192 since July. Low carb, swimming and high rep low weights. No cheat in the vocabulary. You’re cheating yourself.

Your long term goal goal should be to get down to between 170 and 180 depending on how much muscle you put on. Losing 1 pound a week is more than realistic if you improve your diet and exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days.
If motivation is an issue, it will probably be more helpful to set short term goals for for your lifestyle changes rather than the weight loss. The weight loss will come as a result of those changes, but you will experience successes every step of the way if you make exercise and diet changes your goals.

Actually, knowing he's 5'10, I'd think he can get there is more like 4-6 months.
Realistically, most people aren't going to be that ripped at 5'10, 185. That makes it easier to hit 185, because there will still probably be another 15-20 pounds in the tank to really have low bf.

I dont eat horribly. No fast food. No sodas. dont drink often. But i just hold a gut that i cant seem to cut into.

For men, the abdomen is where fat generally remains after it has been reduced in other areas. Getting rid of that extra 10% body fat in that area requires a regular daily caloric deficit, usually some combination of cardio and a small caloric deficit each day. Intermittent fasting can help a lot.
