I’ve always had a crunching in my right shoulder for a long time, but it never produced pain. For the last couple months I’ve been using rings for my upper body exercises. After my lifting session and even into the next day I experience some soreness in the right shoulder. It’s not a terrible or sharp pain, but hearing about rotator cuff injuries, I’d really like to prevent it from becoming something more. The soreness goes away usually the next day, and I exercise again. I may have to give up the rings, not sure. (For pressing movements anyway) Which sucks because I’ve been enjoying using them. Mainly I only do push-ups and rows with them and I work to keep my elbows tucked in close to my sides, but every few workouts I try to do a few dips and top position holds to check my progress. I was making good progress and enjoying it. Any of y’all more experienced have any input on these symptoms?

Back off for a couple weeks. Do light stuff. Trust me. If I would have backed off occasionally over the years I wouldn't be in the dire straights I'm n now with my body. Rest goes a long way.

Is this the front of your shoulder near the top? If not, where at?

If so...

I'd suspect the following:
-You are habitually internally rotated, and that area is all junky. Do you also use a mouse a lot at work?

-Your chest is tight, especially your pec minor. This is making your internal rotation even more problematic. You might even start to feel additional soreness in your traps.

-Because your chest is tight, your subclavius is also getting tight, putting even more strain in the region.

No

Yes, some

I’m guilty of an imbalanced upper body. Starting as a preteen I’ve always done bench presses and pushups. I’m trying to remedy this situation, really focusing on body weight rows and chin-ups. I really don’t like barbell rows. They just feel wrong for me.

There is almost no question there is some scapula weakness/ instability going on here. Your stabilizers are not handling the instability and strain the rings put on them so you are getting compensation and strain anteriorly, very common. Look up Crossover Symmetry.

Not a doctor, but you may have arthritis. My theory is that's what I have so it must be the same. I was worried about a separation or rotator cuff problem. Stretches, fish oil, and ibuprofen as needed. Doctor prescribed some topical but side effects included potential for my peepee to fall off, so I tossed it.

I'm probably wrong, but you get what you pay for.

I second Crossover Symmetry; a great method for fixing your shoulder weaknesses and imbalances.

Couple vids I recommend:

5 Way Shoulder

You could have an impingement, I just finished up 2 months of PT for this. I thought I tore my rotator cuff, but it ended being a lousy posture habit combined with an awkward lifting motion that left a slight tightness in my front top shoulder. It really gave me issues when I slept.

I spent 2 months doing back exercises to strengthen the "everyday muscles" that keep you upright to relieve the pain and it helped tremendously.

I've seen been going to the gym and lifting quite a bit, but every-once in awhile it will get tight and I will tone down the heavy lifting and focus on the strength and stability exercises that I learned from PT.

I pray to God that I never tear my rotator cuff, bc I have seen the pain people are in after that surgery and its takes a long time to rehab.

I would suggest researching some back excersisies, lay off working out your chest, and look into ways to stretch your pecs.

GL

Also, ibuprofen is your friend. If the inflammation doesn't go down it will always be an issue.

Thanks everyone for your help. The pain isn’t a big issue YET. The pain is so slight I don’t need ibuprofen or ice at the moment. I just want to make sure I prevent any major injuries that require professional treatment or surgery. The crunching has been going on for years. I don’t even know how long. The soreness goes away after a day or two then it feels fine. I had some tendinitis in both elbows that I’ve somewhat conquered. It’ll flare up here and there but I can live with it.
