I'm trying to figure out what the best heart rate monitor / app is the best to use on a) runs and b) during HIIT workouts. In both cases, it seems like from what I read the chest straps ones are the best.

For running, I assume I am going to want a watch in tandem to monitor? For HIIT workouts, is there a good app I can use on my phone to keep track while I work out? I've read the Apple Watch is not very reliable, so wondering if I need anything different?

If you don't have a "fitness" watch a lot of the bluetooth chest straps can pair with a phone.

I have a Polar H10 to use with my GPS watch, but there is also a Polar app to track workouts if you don't have one.

I have a whoop and love it but it’s probably overkill for what you’re looking for.

I have a garmin forerunner 245 music watch. Ive compared it with many other heart rate monitors and it's always within a few bpms. I think the newer watches these days are plenty accurate enough for tracking workouts. Idk much about other brands but garmin tracks aerobic vs anaerobic and guesstimates Vo2max

I would agree. I have a Garmin 235, which obviously isn't one of the newest watches available.

However, after borrowing a Garmin chest strap for several runs, only to have the results show similar to my watch results, I've decided the optical hr on the watch is close enough for me.

I don't have to a have it accurate to the nth degree - just reasonably close.

The new new wrist HR monitors are just as good as the chest straps in my experience. The technology improved a lot over the past couple of years.

I have a Polar H7. It's a chest strap one and I like it. I use it with Runkeeper app on my phone.
