For the longest time I’ve been running for workouts. 3-10 miles 3 or so times a week. Lately I just keep having injuries. Mainly really bad plantar fasciitis and occasional runners knee. I quit 2 weeks ago. I have to do something because the running was really helpful for my mental health. I joined a gym yesterday and about to go get on an elliptical. Might as well get into some lifting. What do y’all recommend or point me in the direction of a plan.

Strong lifts 5x5 is a great starting point. You can find the program online.

Stronglifts

I recommend it because it’s simple and effective at building strength through compound lifts. Building a good strength foundation with good form will set you up for the best results in the long run.

There’s plenty of YouTube videos online that you can use to get your form down. Squat University is a good channel to check out

Swimming has been great for me. Incorporate more strokes for a varied total muscle workout.

My goals are just keeping weight off. If I don’t work out I end up around 230. I’m 6 ft. I feel best when I’m 190ish. I’m sitting around 205 right now. I can get to 190 on diet alone, but I like to splurge at times. It’s been a long time since I’ve incorporated weights so I’m not sure what that will do with body weight.

I use an app called Fitbod. Plans all my lifts, muscle recovery, prior achievements, etc. I like it because I don’t have to think about what I’m doing that much since the app takes care of it. I’ll swap out some exercises and adjust recommended weight, reps etc but 90% of it is done by the app. Only $60 for the year which is a steal.

If you were running to keep the weight off, I’m guessing your heart rate remained elevated.
I would do super-sets when lifting weights. Elliptical or stair-climber will help too.

Have you thought about joining a CrossFit, HIIT, or similar type gym. Many incorporate lifting weights and metabolic conditioning, so you get both cardio and muscle building. Plus, a lot of the skills are challenging to become efficient, so you’ve always got motivation to get better.

My schedule is all over the place. Plus I tend to wake up anywhere from 3-4 so I joined a 24 hr gym. I did try the row today after an hour of being there. That thing is great.
