Statue to Statue 15K

quote:

Welcome to the 31st running of the Ellis Porch Statue to Statue 15k. Starting in the shadow of Vulcan's statue and finishing near the Statue of Liberty, the race winds its way through the scenic neighborhoods of Mountain Brook, Alabama. The course gently rolls and is generally downhill for the first six miles. Runners then head up a pair of hills that are among the most challenging you'll find. The reward for climbing the hills is a fast mile-and-a-half downhill finish that's sure to generate the quickest splits you've ever run. Yes, it's a challenging course but you haven't run Birmingham until you run the race we like to call The South's Toughest 15k!

Hill one starts at 686' and climbs to 932' over 3/4 of a mile. Hill two starts at 819' and climbs to 989' over 3/4 of a mile. The reward for this punishment is going from 989' to 483' over the next 1.75 miles. Not sure there's enough on ramps to train for this.....

There's a group of psychos that run this race, then turn around a run it back. I will NOT be a part of that group.

You train for this in Hoover or Vestavia, easy peasy

My run yesterday in Hoover:

ETA: Full disclaimer I'm actually training for the Rock 'n Roll Full and can't make the 15K this year - but I would be crazy enough to turn around and run back

Maybe it's because I mostly train for mountaineering, but 1,000 ft of elevation gain over a 9.2 mile long stretch doesn't sound like much.

That looks like a dude doubled over throwing up into a sink

Which would be me trying to run a hilly 15k

It's actually about 730ft in all ascension - compared to a lot of races in the south it's a pretty fast course; mostly because of ending at a much lower elevation than you started.

(I'm mostly a trail runner - so I'm used to about 175 - 250 ft ascension per mile, this race was really fast last year)

That's awesome, I will never view my hill attack day the same ever again

I'm in Cahaba Heights. So every route I run is potentially brutal. Your climb in that Hoover run is what I do over here every Thursday. Once a month, I'll run the Statue course backwards. Only made it up that hill twice without having to walk some. It's brutal.

I have a hill close to my house that I still haven't been able to run up - it's about a quarter of a mile at a 30% grade, my goal before Rock 'n Roll is to run up it and keep going.

(a few of the hills on my Hoover Run are also brutal, but mostly brutal over a longer distance and not quite as big of a grade)

Unless I forgot how to do math these hills just aren't that bad.
Hill one starts at 686' and climbs to 932' over 3/4 of a mile. this is 6.2% avg

Hill two starts at 819' and climbs to 989' over 3/4 of a mile. this is 4.2% avg

6% isn't fun but far from brutal and shouldn't be a problem for even flatlanders to prepare for.

2023 -
Activities 40
Distance 358.3 mi
Time 47h 47m
Elev Gain 16,522 ft

We used to run a half marathon outside of Hot Springs every July. We started on top of a mountain and went straight down the first 2 miles, which wrecked your legs, then went the next 4 1/2 miles along a road with rolling hills. Then we turned around and ran back and up that damn mountain, all in the heat and humidity. The Seventh Day Adventist sponsored it and they were some sadistic bastards.

Training started today. Put in 7 miles with 1000’ of climb. Did 6, 1/4 uphill sprints and the rest at 140 HR.

Drank beer and ate fried chicken at Waldo’s in Cahaba Heights.

ETA: Will be doing this every Thursday up until the race if anyone wants to come and abuse themselves.

Brutal, but fun. I didn’t get the time I wanted…. Been slacking on long runs last two months due to fishing tournaments. Anyway, did 8:30/mile which finished in the top 25% but only top 50% for my age group. Seems there are a bunch of 50ish freaks in Bham.

If anyone wanted to really challenge themselves on some hills outside of the West, this is your race. Hot dogs and beer at the finish line. Really a fun race.
