Two months ago, I started running. 2 miles on Monday-Thursday and 4 miles on Saturday. Was running at a 9:15 pace.

Now I’m running 5 miles Monday-Thursday and 10 miles on Saturday. Ran this morning at a 6:58 pace. Super stoked about my progress. I’ve lost 17 pounds as well.

You must have a running background to be able to improve that much over such a short time

I’d go for an occasional run the last few years, but my pace never got better than 8:00. I probably ran once every two weeks.

It also probably helps that I’m 18

Ran a 5k last August in 27 and some change, clocked in at 26:29 last night. Pretty disappointed in myself, I was hoping to be sub 25 by now, going to attempt it again and really try to break it this weekend.

The older I get the slower I get, I still think I can run like I did in high school. Long gone are the days of sub 6 and 7 mile paces. The silver lining is I can run 9min pace for days if I had to.

Hopefully you get to run some races post COVID! Improving mile pace and personal records is always rewarding.

You can or faster for a lot of distances unless you're talking mile or 800. 5K and up should still be fair game.

You're running 10 mile runs at a sub-7:00 pace? On 30 miles a week at 18? After only two months of consistent running?

Son, you might want to start setting your sights on actually competing. You stick with it for a year or two, you could really nail some impressive times.

I agree, I could possibly run say, a sub-40 min 10K, but I'm not training like I did 20+ years ago either. I'm happy to still "look like" I can run fast and settle for average these days!

Anyway to OP, keep up the good work and consider adding a day of track/speed work to your routine. Also a lot of good advice on this board about programs and progressions.

If I could have got into running at 18.. I didn’t start running until senior year of college. Never really ran more than a mile before that

He said this morning, so I’m guessing he means 7 min at 5 miles
