My apple watch tracks my HR while sleeping. I've noticed on 4 occasions so far (over the month and half) that my HR jumps up to 120-147 two to three times within an hour on certain nights and typically around 1-2 hours after I am asleep.

On all 4 of these days I had some type of sweets (candy, cookies, or cake) and one night I drank alcohol in excess.

Is this just my body notifying to me that it doesn't like sugar? Is it a malfunction on the watch? Or could it be something more severe?

My resting heart rate is 49 bpm FWIW.

Do you feel like you have any passed on spirits that may be lingering around your home by chance?

Not that I am aware of. Although there was a dead rat outside my building last month.

Okay, so during all your time at the building, had you seen the rat before? Was there any indication that he may have been tied to that building directly, whether emotionally or spiritually?

Do you feel like he lived a happy life, or was his demise too soon?

These aspects all play into the area your issues seem to reside.

No. I think it was a mouse.

This may be hard to accept, but I think you’re being haunted and even more likely possessed.

Your mouse friend is hurt, he knows you at points have referred to him as a rat, and let’s face it, rats have a negative connotation in 2017 whether we like it or not. He’s hurt, and he wants you to know. Maybe go home, have a talk with him, possibly even leave a cheese snack for his final meal before he’s at peace and able to pass into the afterlife. Your probably will disappear if you do this

Sleep apnea

This is less likely with a fit person, which you seem to be with a 49 BPM resting heart rate. However, it's certainly possible. I have a buddy who is quite athletic and he's had sleep apnea for years.

Is sleep apnea something that happens nightly or is it at random?

I find that it can't just be a coincidence it happens on the ONLY nights I have a good amount of sugar.

I would ask your doctor for a 24 hour holter monitor.

Im a pretty fit guy and i have sleep apnea. Sometimes it just depends on position but if you have woken up before with an high heart rate and struggling for air, then thats probably what you have

I don’t wake up when it happens. Sleep right through it.

Apnea during REM sleep, which takes 90 minutes to enter typically. Fitness has zero to do with apnea. I’ve done studies on 100 pound cheerleaders with terrible snoring/apnea.

OP go to nearest ambulance service, fire dept, etc and have them check your pulse and see how close it is to your watch to make sure it’s legit. Let them know your issue and if your watch is working correctly go see a doctor. That’s a really high HR to be sleeping with, firefighter/paramedic here. Not that that means shite, but it wouldn’t bother me if someone came to fire house and asked me to do that.

Am I stubborn to think it has to be related with my sugar intake? It only has happened on the only days that I've had sugar.

So the only 4 times I've eaten sweets in the last month and a half.

Every other night, my heart rate is absolutely fine with no spikes.

A HR in the 140s seems very extreme from just sugar. I’m not an exercise kinda guy, and after drinking probably an entire pot of coffee every morning my HR at most hits 90, usually stays around 60-65. I would make sure your watch is calibrated correctly first and if it is to see a doctor.
