Experiencing My 1st Bad Flare-up of Tendinitis in My Shoulder

A couple of months ago I saw an Orthopedist for a initial consultation. My right shoulder woild hurt from time to time, but no lingering pain. MRI, X-ray, and movement tests indicated I suffer from calcific tendinitis and not much can be done short of surgery.
Last Wednesday I started feeling pain again in my right shoulder. By Thursday I was in so much pain that I couldn't lift my upper arm at all and got zero sleep because no position was comfortable. I saw the Orthopedist again on Friday and was told I was experiencing a bad flare-up. He opted against giving me a cortisone shot and sent me home to take Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen for 10 days.
I don't know if others have experienced shoulder tendinitis like I have, but it's been brutal. I can pull my arm out to the side but still can't raise it straight out & up. Sleeping better but not back to normal. Right now it feels like a tiny, numb pain like a vaccination shot but other times it feels like a hot poker being pushed into my arm anywhere from just below the shoulder socket to the top of my bicep.
Don't be like me and put off getting pain like this checked out by an Orthopedic Doctor. I waited too long, and now that I've experienced my future I'll plan for surgery sooner rather than later.

I separated my right shoulder in high school and it still bothers me. I can't do arm circles forward with both arms at the same time because my right is so stiff. Just takes extra time and effort to loosen up, it is what it is I guess.

LED Therapy!
I treated my long term L-knee tendinitis with it and I’m pain free now.

No.
I run but the pain started before I began running so I don't think it was a trigger. I honestly think some of it has to do with my use of a computer and mouse for work, and I'm not provided with the most ergonomic furniture at work.

Switch hands on the mouse and give the problematic shoulder a break.
..and try LED therapy.

Have you tried PT? I've dealt with tendinitis as well. It's freaking brutal. But I found a really good PT that helped me tremendously. I currently don't have any pain. I'm hopeful the pain doesn't come back.

I’m still waiting for you to send me a prototype.

I asked about PT, and my arm is still strong enough where PT isn't required.
The pain is caused by the irritation and then reabsorption of the small calcuim deposits that form on the tendons. Doing some dangerous internet research some nonsurgical options are shockwave and ultrasound therapy. There is also a procedure where needles would be stuck into my arm and then used to suck out the calcium.
This is also likened to and sometimes misdiagnosed as frozen shoulder.

Ok so you need to start doing upper back work. You nailed what is the most likely culprit.
You need to look at
band pull apart
YWT
Banded face pulls
Banded Y pull apart
Shoulder dislocated
And you should honestly start doing some form of resistance training, specifically some form of horizontal row to build your upper back snd stop the internal rotation.
But get you a small mini band and a broomstick
Start with this daily
10 shoulder dislocates with broomstick
25 Y 2 Tband pull aparts
50 band pull apart
25 YWTs
Try that for two weeks and check back.
You can look up the exercises on YouTube. The y band pull aparts you hold your band above your head with arms in Y shape. Pull down and apart until you form a T. Start light holding only one side of band. Progress slowly over weeks.
Also defranco has a bunch of good stuff on this on his Instagram.

The prototypes still cost money to build. I’ve sent 5-6 out.

Did he explain why he opted against an injection? I know every case is different but wife wife got more than a year of relief with an injection for the same issue.

Cortisone injections just mask the pain for a short while.
I had two done in my L-knee a year apart. The first eliminated the pain for about 3 months, the 2nd did nothing.
I’m mostly pain free now and I attribute it solely to LED therapy because I haven’t done anything else differently except using it over the last 9 months.

That’s why I’m curious. It is not the definitive treatment but it could have provided him significant pain relief. Ultimately he’s going to need the calcific deposit debrided.
My shoulder issue was different than his but I had an injection about 6 years ago after dealing with pain for 7-8 months. The pain has never returned.

How it was explained to me was that the risk of a cortisone shot outweighed the reward in this particular instance, at least without first trying Ibuprofen for 10 days. Something to do with the location of the inflammation. It's low dose & frequency (400mg x2 for the first three days, then 200mg x2 for the next seven) with one regular strength Tylenol. If this doesn't work then the shot will be considered.

LSUAlum2001, do you happen to know what was the source of the inflammation in you L-knee? I'm curious to know.

Age and overworked?
I had an MRI done in 2018 and it was low grade patella tendonosis with softening of cartilage under the knee cap.
I had ankle surgery in 2015 and I think I overstressed the knee due to not achieving full ankle mobility before going right back into the gym 12 weeks later.
It’s too bad I can’t get a free MRI from BROC to compare my 2018 results to see what changes have occurred.

Don’t lift any weights directly over your head ie military press. Do inclined bench. After a workout take some ibuprofen to keep the swelling down.

Bro how muchbfor one of those led therapy things?
Posted on 3/19/21 at 4:55 pm to lsu777
Thanks everyone. I'm back now to where I can lift my arm straight up. Still haven't attempted a run or weights yet. I bookmarked lsu777's post about workouts and resistance.
