So the last cycle of 5/3/1 I was kind of feeling that I wasn't getting into as good of starting position with my belt on. It seems to kind of be making it impossible to get "set"

Then I read Rippletoe who has said something similar ( LINK)

I use the Rogue Ohio belt which is 4''

LINK

Thoughts on this? Should I try moving the belt first? Thoughts on having a 2nd belt? and if yes which would you recommend just for deads now since I love this belt for squats

First question, when are you trying to draw air?

Most people do it after they have the bar in their hands, but if you're not super flexible and there's some rounding, it can exacerbate it.

Also, can you get a side still of your set position before you pull? Sometimes your body lies to you and good positioning feels uncomfortable.

I'd cross those two questions before changing belt position or using a different belt.

I had trouble too. I think they make a narrower belt specifically for DL. I didn’t have a problem when I did sumo though.

Will do all of this next session. Will probably put the belt on in my warm-ups just to see what's what.

To be clearer about what I'd said/meant, if you're pulling singles, you can also get your air at the top, brace, and then lower to grab the bar.

It's hard on multiple rep sets because you have to reset your brace and you're not doing it with the bar on the floor.

Why do you need a belt?

I’ve never used a belt for deads. Not sure if it’s because of a comfort issue or just something I’ve never done.

I use the trap bar, grab at the handles level with the bar, don’t use straps, and have been able to work up to 425# singles in a matter of 9 months.

Was constantly having low back pain with squats with belt and deads without for years. Finally decided to force myself, focus on good form, started with 185# sets, do deads at least 2x/wk, and actually now have less low back pain issues than I’d had for the previous 10 years.

Good luck man

how is your bracing and form without a belt?

that could be a huge factor as their could be an issue in just the basics.

I didn't use my belt this week because it was bothering me so much, and I feel fine 2 days later, normal soreness but nothing in my lower back that has me concerned.

I may just not use the belt for a while, but also may experiment with it some more on some warm up sets or weeks of deload so I'm not at risk of injury with the lighter weights.

Trap bar will also alleviate a lot of flexibility and bracing issues that come with straight bar deads.

It's a more upright position where it's easier to get the chest up.

How’s your mobility in your lower spine hip flexors and extensors

Did you also gain any unnoticed weight

And how is your breathing?

I can say I've put on 10 lbs over the past 4 months or so; some intentional bulking and some was just the holiday season (most of that weight is probably just bloat) but yeas I was thinking it could be that.

I feel pretty mobile and don't have any problems without the belt getting into a good position

Is it a lever belt?

Those would occasionally pinch me if I had it on too tight which impeded my ability to get down for a pull

That's a good thought that reminds me that I usually have to wear my belt slightly looser on dead than squat.

OP could also try a slightly looser fit and see if that changes things.
