I got a lot of my equipment from NY barbell. It’s not top end stuff by any means, but it works. My cage I’ve had for over 12 years and has multiple attachments that all work well. One brand that does not get enough love is Rep. I’ve got a set of Rep dumbbells from 5 -75 lbs and they’re top notch. I also have their glute/ham developer. I think going forward I’ll exclusively buy from Rep.

As far as a home gym, yes, it’s expensive. My equipment easily ran me $6-$8 thousand, but I use it five times per week and have been for years. Recommend not going too cheap on equipment as you get what you pay for.

Took me a bit to dig through my post history to find this. I did this write up a while back and think it holds up.

quote:

Things to not skimp on:
Power Rack. Get a quality one that is either 1” or 5/8” hardware and you’ll never need to replace it.

Barbell. If you’re in a garage in Louisiana, bite the bullet and get stainless for rust resistance. Get a barbell that works for your needs (I recommend Rogue Ohio Bar for oly and Ohio Power Bar for powerlifting style). Weights.

Get bumpers. Versatility is king in garage gyms and bumpers are simply more versatile and will be more resistant to corrosion.

Bench. This would be the one place that has some price decisions. A cheap flat bench can be found on Amazon that will serve you well. If you want an adjustable, spend the money on a good one.

Priorities after that (in my opinion, not everyone is the same):
1. Olympic Rings
2. Weight vest
3. Dumbbells. I have powerblocks but have heard good things about nuobells. While regular separate DB’s is certainly best, in a garage gym space and versatility is limited so adjustables are going to work better for most.
4. Kettlebells. You can also get kettlebell attachments to the powerblocks if you get those.
5. Dip attachment
6. Rowing machine/bike

While I may have forgotten something, pretty much anything after this is a luxury item. Many people go for GHD items, I went for specialty bars. There are a lot of different companies and price variations, but I’ve abided by the saying “buy once, cry once.” There is no doubt in gym equipment more likely than not the more expensive item is going to last you longer.

Tiers of brands:
Sorinex

Rogue

Rep Fitness (except their benches are legit)
Fringe Sports
Fray

Titan

If buying American is a concern to you, you’ll want to avoid Rep and Titan as the majority of their products are made in China.

Is that one of the folding wall mounted racks? If so which one? Looks like they have a couple of options but not sure what the differences are. Any negatives about it being wall mounted?

wall mounted are great for space saving but doesnt allow you to lift inside the rack which is the safest way.

i would suggest if you do a folding rack, make sure its 3x3 and either 5/8" or 1" holes.

doing 3x3 gives you the best options in terms of options for accessories.

I’ve had one since Nov last year (the version you load 2” plates on). It’s held up well; I put a plate peg on the back pointing back and store 45s on it rather than bolting it to the wall and it has been fine. When you assemble it, lube the bearings on the pulley wheels as you build it because you can’t easily do so after it’s installed. If you have some spare cash then the aluminum pulleys would be a nice upgrade too.

That’s exactly the one I’m getting too. I’m going to try the original pulleys first.

How is the height? Only thing I’m concerned about

How many 45s you run on the back and where? I may do that also as I don’t like where my 45s are right now. I have about 12 45s

I’m going to be building my house in a couple years. I cannot wait to start my “build me an iron temple” thread. I’m going to get silly with it.

It is, though we have never folded it up.

Its a Rogue rack, though I don't know the model.

If you like to lift inside the rack, it isn't possible to with this set up.
