Hi all. My work recently relocated ~3 miles from my house. My dress code is such that I can ride a bike to and from work. So, I’m looking for bike recommendations.

I haven’t been as active over the past couple of months as I normally like to be, and my hope is that biking to work 3-4 days a week will help jumpstart me back into good habits this spring. I’m not a cyclist by any means and have zero experience with bikes. I’m comfortable spending $500-$800ish and have been looking at the Specialized Sirrus SL. It’s available locally (northshore). Thoughts on this bike? Other recommendations? I have also looked at the Crosstrail, but this riding is going to be 100% concrete and there aren’t really any off-road areas to ride near me that I’m aware of.

Thanks in advance

Any decent mountain bike or hybrid will do. I would buy one at a pawnshop or on Craigslist for cheap and upgrade if you use it a lot. What city are you in?

Madisonville. I checked out the Spokesman in Mandeville and they have the Sirrus available, which is why I mentioned it.

I'd also like the opportunity to turn this into another fitness activity, so I don't mind spending more on the front end on something fast/quality. I've also deduced from reading that I'd probably be best served by something without suspension.

That's a good basic hybrid and would be good for commuting and general fitness.

Thanks man. Appreciate the insight. Any input on disc brakes vs. rim brakes?

I was out in your area today riding the Tammany Trace. Man I'm envious of you living so close to that path. I ride a Specialized Diverge but that's probably out of your price range. I'd love to be able to cycle to work. Enjoy!

I have a disc brake bike and honestly wish I had a rim break bike. Discs add about 200 and up to the price of a bike right off the bat. If you don’t have serious hills and plan on staying out of the rain, rim will do just fine.

Yes, rim brakes. Modern rim brakes do fine in the rain too.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I’m going to go with the Sirrus SL. If they have rim brakes, I’ll just go with that.
