Donated blood the other day and saw my total cholesterol was 270.
Obviously not ideal so wanted to see what I could do besides work out more and take fish oil & niacin supplements.
TIA and here’s WWE/NXT wrestler Scarlett Bordeaux for your troubles

Everything you’ve been taught about cholesterol is wrong... check This thread out and it has a cholesterol section with links to videos and articles.

The red yeast rice worked for me although not as much as working out, dropping body fat and raising HDL.

Ref yeast rice, fish oil (mostly for Triglycerides), Niacin (B3), metamucil (taste like orange juice).
If you are really worried, just get on a low dose statin. Cholesterol is one of those things you may be at in increased risk wise genetically. Plenty of cardiologist think statins should be in water for everyone

Before meds I would work on diet and exercise (increase in cardio). Increase your leafy vegetables and fruits, start eating rolled oats for breakfast, and green tea once or twice a day. I try to have a salad 2-3 times a week for lunch with spinach and variety of other vegetables with a very simple salad dressing of quality olive oil and vinegar. Salmon once or twice a week or at least a fish oil supplement helps too.
But like was mentioned, go get a full panel done and discuss with your family practitioner about nutrition and what you can do pre-meds.

I'm curious to know what you think these do to help cholesterol. Cardio is exercise, but it doesn't inherently have better effects of controlling cholesterol than any other exercise.

National Institute of Health: exercise and cholesterol
quote:
The evidence suggests that a moderate-intensity exercise programme will be effective in increasing HDL cholesterol. This will have a positive impact upon atherosclerosis (hardening of artery walls through plaque and fat accumulation [13]) via HDL cholesterol-facilitated removal of LDL cholesterol. To directly reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, however, the intensity of aerobic exercise must be increased—something that may not be possible in individuals with a limited exercise capacity or other risk factors.
Now, what I do find interesting in that article is that they also showed reduction in cholesterol with strength training as well; however, there has been little research into the combination of both.
quote:
The evidence presented above demonstrates the effectiveness of both aerobic exercise and resistance training in controlling and improving cholesterol levels through various modes, frequencies, intensities and durations of exercise, in different populations. There is limited literature that has examined the two modalities combined,

The addition of resistance training to aerobic exercise will supplement—and possibly enhance—the effects on the lipid profile
Again, cardio is exercise and good, but its not any better than resistance training to control cholesterol. With resistance training, according to your own article, you get the benefits of cholesterol control, plus the added benefits of added bone density, lean muscle growth, etc.

"The limited data available on green tea support a potential association between green tea and beneficial properties in relationship to risk factors for cardiovascular disease,"
Some observational studies that we have no background on arent really compelling evidence.

The bottom line is that cholesterol simply isn't a problem. There is no reason to go on meds for this.
