I tried them long ago for anxiety and feeling low. I honestly don’t think I gave them a fair shake because I didn't like some of the side effects. I've always struggled with slight depression and anxiety my whole life, I’ve always just dealt with it. I'm hoping a long commitment to diet and exercise mixed in with some supplements (5-HTP, L-Tryptophan) will do the trick. I’ve always worked out on and off and my diet could stand to be better. I’d say my diet has been 50/50 as far as good versus bad. I do have a long history of drinking heavily on the weekends (once per week average). My question for those taking antidepressants or who used to, do you feel like they helped? Were side effects manageable? Has anyone overcome anxiety and depression with diet, exercise, and supplements? I realize that diet, exercise, and limiting alcohol needs to happen. Being that I’ve dealt with this my whole life, I’m starting to think lifestyle changes will help some, but not be enough. I’m getting plenty of sleep, no sleep ap, and I’m also working on stress reduction. I suppose low hormones could play a role in this too although I haven’t had them checked. I’m tired and worn down so something has to give. Thank you in advance for any stories or insight.

I've been on a "cocktail" for bipolar disorder and depression for a few years now. I experienced lethargy at the beginning but once I got acclimated it was fine. Also, try some positive lifestyle changes (i.e. diet and exercise) or pick up a hobby. I don't think it would hurt to talk to your GP or a psychiatrist about it and figure out some options.

I'm not bad off or anything, I just feel like things could be better. I struggle with fatigue, brain fog, irritability, anxiety, etc. I plan on speaking with a doctor at some point but wanted to see how some lifestyle changes might affect these symptoms. I'm about to try 5-HTP along with some lifestyle changes to see if it works. Ultimately I'm going to see a doc if all else fails. I'm hoping to fix it naturally and not be tied to a prescription for the rest of my life.

I gave Zoloft a try back when I was on adderall because the adderall made me even more irritable and angry than I already was. The Zoloft made me so tired that I fell asleep on the job after chewing up an adderall. I hated that, so I switched to clonopin because I have trouble sleeping.

I've been off all of that for over 5 years now. I found that, for me, working out 5 to 6 times a week is the stress relief I needed and my anger came from being unhappy with my fatness.

Anxiety has always been an issue for me. Seems to run heavily in the family. About a year ago I started exercising/lifting. Helped keep my mind clear. Also recently started intermittent fasting. I would go from 8 or 9pm to 12 or 1 the next day fasting. Could be placebo effect, but that gave me lots more energy and drive, especially first thing in the mornings. The trigger to the anxiety for me though, has seemed to be the alcohol. It's a vicious cycle.....drink a lot, and then wake up with terrible anxiety. So, start drinking again that evening to deal with the anxiety, and so on.

Exercise will help.

Exercise during anxiety or a panic attack is not possible.

Try everything you're gonna try. Everyone is different. I put up a thread a while back in the middle of a full blown panic attack. I got some decent responses that might help you.

I also got a few "suck it up pussy" 's.

To be expected.

I take Wellbutrin with the occasional Valium to help an "attack".

YouTube meditation videos. There are a ton of those. They range from the really helpful to WTF videos that just make you feel better about yourself.

My simple tip. BREATHE. I guarantee you are doing one of two things. Hyperventilating or holding your breath and being hyper vigilant.

Good luck

Battled depression and anxiety most of my adult life. Have managed most of that time without any anti-depressants. Hit a rough patch several months back and have been on Prozac for a few months now. The only side effects I noticed went away after about 3 weeks once my body adjusted. I had jaw clenching, headaches, insomnia, and it actually made my anxiety worse the first week or two. Doctor warned me about that though, so it wasn't a shock. Those all went away though for the most part. Still have some insomnia every now and then, mostly waking up around 3 in the morning and having trouble getting back to sleep.

The benefits of it have far outweighed the initial side effects. I'm much more engaged in my family, work, and friends, and they all have noticed a difference.

I've also been on zoloft and lexapro in the past. Zoloft made me sleep all the time. Lexapro was just okay. Prozac is the best of the three for me.

Exercise will obviously help. Your hormones are helped immensely with fatty foods, which makes ketosis diet great. I will almost guarantee you will be in a better mood in a week or two after doing the ketosis diet (without cheating).

This is a fun cocktail that is way cheaper to put together yourself than to buy it, but it's called NeuroLink.
Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate) 20 mg
L-Tyrosine 1000 mg
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) 500 mg
L-Glutamine 400 mg
L-Taurine 400 mg
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) 100 mg

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. zatetic, would this be something taken all at once or in separate doses? I already have a lot of these supplements. I'm going to try intermittent fasting along with a keto diet to kick the sugar cravings and use fat for fuel. I've also made a commitment to workout 5 days per week.

If you were to get the neurolink it is one-half to one dosage twice a day, so i suppose you can take that dosage all at once. Truth be told you have to use small measuring spoons to get make that dosage full strength so trying to halve it would be tough

It sounds like you are trying to change your life a lot all at once. Don't overwhelm yourself. Better to take one secure step at a time than to take a big leap. I'm not saying you can't do it either, just don't want you to fail. You are on your way to greatness!

Research your carb levels. I know some people have success with a low carb diet improving their mood swings.

Saw a doctor for anxiety and panic attacks earlier this year. I believe it was Effexor that she prescribed . I'd always been scared of prescription drugs of this nature, but I worked up the courage and agreed. I waited for a long weekend to start not knowing what to expect. I only took one dose. The first few hours I felt kind of loopy. Giggly sort of. Went to bed that night, and woke up several times that night feeling very anxious. I felt much worse than ever. It didn't completely go away until the end of the weekend. So for me, the fear I had of prescriptions is now enhanced even further. I saw the doctor again and she prescribed another type. I know they work for some people, but I don't think I'll ever try again.

Exercise seems to help me a lot, physically as well as mentally in everyday life, but I've always been an on/off exerciser. I'll lift weights for months at a time, then go months without.

If you aren't that bad, I would make lifestyle changes first and then reassess. Meds help and are needed for some people, but IMP should be last resort. If you can do it all natural you will be better off than having to depend on medicine (that is nothing against the people that do need the meds).

Stick to the diet and exercise strictly for 90 days and if you are still experiencing the symptoms contact a doctor.

Good luck.

As a doctor, I highly advise you to go see a doctor now. I wouldn't plan on supplements being the long term solution. I see anxiety and depression every day and getting on the right med for you will seriously change your life.

I was prescribed ssri's before. I was wandering and not knowing what to do with my life.

Lifestyle and diet differences are huge. Clean up the diet and no fast food. I'd say just cooking your food from scratch is the best advice.

Or you can take it like me and go full Keto (science behind Keto and brain function) then, of course run it all the way to "zero carb" and just eating meat. There is a groundness and an "I don't care about other people's issues" mood to it....hard to discribe. There are anecdotes out there throughout the observations of native populations not crying at all, really, when loved ones pass on.

The OP said himself that his anxiety isn't debilitating, but he does have problems with it. He also said he knows he could improve his diet and exercise. I'm not a doctor so I'm asking sincerely, but you don't think making other changes before trying meds would be an option? Taking chemical altering medicine seems like it should he a last resort to me.

Everyone's experience is different, but diet changes and exercise had little to no impact on my depression/anxiety. I didn't go full keto, just lower carb(aim for around 40g of carbs a day) and I feel better physically. Started riding my bike more thinking the solitude would help clear my head. Neither had a noticeable impact on my mood though. A few months into Prozac and I feel like a different person. My plan is to taper off of them once I hit 6 months and see how things go. My doc was good with this plan.
