I found a black cat that was about 5 weeks old. Took him to vet, got all of his tests and shots. At about 5 months he became very clumsy with his back legs. Quit sing litter box and was unable to ambulate very well, for example he couldn’t climb in chairs or on the bed. No jumping at all.

Had x-ray at vet. No obvious spinal defects on a regular x-ray. Doc put him on Prednisolone .5 mg twice a day for 5 days and then went to .5 mg once a day for life. He did great for about 5 months and symptoms returned. Back to vet, back to twice a day for 5 days and then back to once a day, he made it about 4 months and symptoms returned. It’s a cycle but he doesn’t make it but a few weeks at .5 mg once a day until symptoms return.

Can we increase his daily dose? My vet has recommended taking him to Tallahassee for MRI and other tests but I don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on this little dude. I’m not an OT baller like most of you. We really live the cat but can’t spend that kind of money on him. We have kids in school and getting married and we just can’t do it.

Can we just increase the dose?

Did the vet say anything about this?

< am a vet

i tend to stay away from specific recommendations on this site and keep it generalized since I'm not the one seeing the patient and don't have a full scope of the situation. So i will keep it to that level here.

I would dissuade you from just increasing the dose without consulting with your vet first. Steroid have dramatic long term effects on the body systems and should be carefully monitored before making adjustments.

i would have an honest discussion with your vet about costs and what other best options could be. Look we get it, its part of our training. Not everyone can afford that type of medicine for their animals. its part of our job to find the best care for the animal within the means of the owner.

I am assuming the reason he wants an MRI is the evaluate the spinal cord and brain. the xray of the spine would only show really obvious physical changes in the spinal cord, not the more subtle things an MRI would detect.

When you say he stopped sitting in the litter box and had trouble ambulating, was it back legs, front legs, all legs?

It’s just his back legs but it comes on gradually over a day or two. Embolism has been ruled out.
