Alcatraz Swim

Has anyone ever done one of these? I am an accomplished swimmer but have never done an open water swim. The Alcatraz Swim is very interesting to me but Im looking for someone with experience that can advise me on how to prepare.

FBI says it's impossible.
I'd imagine the currents are demanding. They cancelled the swimming portion of the NCAA triathlon here in Tuscaloosa last week for the river's currents were too high after recent rains.

Isn’t the water too cold as well?

I know there is an escape from alcatraz triathlon there. Would be a neat experience. Open water swming has never been an issue for me. Especially in a wetsuit which would likely be required in that area. I do 99% of my swimming in a pool and usually get 1 or 2 open water swims in before races come up. Mostly to check equipment like goggles, swim skin, or wetsuit. Some people get open water panic. Even as accomplished swimmers, but its all in your head. Even people swimming on top of me rarely makes me freak out. Usually just get mad and start throwing elbows (I got punched in the face twice last week during a 2.4 mile swim. Same guy. He got an elbow to the ribs to back off).
Sighting is the only difference since there are no black lines. Every 3rd to 5th stroke, pick your head up before turning to the side to breathe. Not easy, but not that hard either.

Ok great commentary. They do these periodically throughout the year and yes the water is cold but people either brave it or wear a wetsuit. It is completely possible and has been done by many in the past. So back to the original question about does anyone know someone to direct me to regarding training for the event?

Get a wetsuit and train in false river in the winter months. Won't be able to replicate the currents or waves but the sighting and cold water will be good practice

Definitely get a full-body wetsuit and practice training open water swimming somewhere. The water here is very cold. I'd expect somewhere in the 50s. Don't remember the distance but you'll want to do 2x the distance in the pool before you attempt it. Open Water swimming is a very different game than pool swimming.
I know a few people who have done it. Ton of fun. Definitely go for it!

Water is 53 degrees. My wife did that race several years ago the same one a man from Austin died in.
