Aggrivating shoulder injury...any ideas as to what it is?

About two weeks ago, when doing incline bench, on the lift, there was a pop in my right shoulder. It was like something was in the way and the "pop" moved it.
Well ever since, it has been aggravating me. I have some decrease of strength/stamina, more noticeable on over head type movements. I've taken advil and iced it. I'll be honest and say I have not stopped working out but have taken 3-4 days rest in between working anything that I feel aggravates it. It still lingers - like a soreness that is emphasized with certain motions.
Any other ideas of what I could/should do before seeking a doctor opinion? Take an entire week off and immobilize? TIA

Shoulder pain sucks. You've got to lay off bench/shoulder stuff long enough to know if you're injured or just hurt. Could take a month or more. If pain persists, go see an ortho. Good luck, been there.

most likely a popped ac joint AKA "separated shoulder". I partially separated mine about a year ago and foolishly waited 6 months before going to the doctor.

Get it checked out. It can easily be seen in an x-ray, so if it's not an act joint, then your looking at labrum and rotator cuff tears as most likely. I was given anti-inflammatory drugs and oral steroids.

Things to help prevent it from getting worse:
1) external rotation rotator cuff exercises with a band

2) strengthen your mid back. look up crossover symmetry exercises and set up some bands to imitate the tool. (do not do the pressing movements)

3) layoff of straight bar for awhile

Is it in the joint or more muscle?

Hard to tell. I sit here now and it's hard to reproduce the pain. Last night it was pretty sore (5 on pain scale). When it is sore, there is a spot on the front of the shoulder I can press and reproduce it but right now, it's not tender. Last trip to the gym was Sunday and yes I did bench.

Now that I think more about it, a dip type movement tends to reproduce it more than anything else.

I have the same issue. Right on the front of the shoulder, deep muscle pain. When I workout chest or shoulders my right shoulder has significantly more "burn" than my left.

Only advice I can give you is not working out. That's the only time it's ever stopped bothering me and no real tests from the Dr have turned up anything. Small shoulder circles and some stretching seem to help but that's all I've discovered.

If it's on the front of the shoulder,it might be the long head of the biceps, which is a common cause of shoulder pain, and removed from its groove in many shoulder surgeries.

I dunno about OP, but mine occurs right around 1-2" above my armpit. It's mostly just a real deep burn. Not enough to make me go under the knife though.

Update: went to ortho today. Did his manipulations and eval - felt it's just aggravated and inflamed - got an injection of roids and some prescription strength ibuprofen. Recheck in 6 wks and MRI if not improved.

That's good to hear.

I had something similar happen a year ago in softball during three different at bats my left shoulder felt like it was popping, nothing too painful but more of a numbness feeling like it was going to sleep. I don't know what your symptoms are directly but from what I remember the head of my delts felt much weaker than normal when lifting my arms laterally in one specific spot.

I immediately took 5-7 off from the gym and when I got back focused on extremely light movements just to get muscles loose and did mostly band work. The hardest part is wanting to jump back to your normal weights as early as you can, I was able to do my normal exercises at say 30% max, 40% max, 50% max week by week and would only increase it if I didn't have any extended soreness 24-72 hours after.

The shoulder is one of the areas of the body that is open to injury and very hard to heal naturally. Try to stretch it every other day and there are excellent stretching exercises which I would focus on solely for a week if you can, the more you can get blood flowing in that area the better. Remember at the end of the day listen to your body if you need to take an extra day off do it, no use in trying to jump back into heavy weights too soon.

Great news. Glad you came here first. The OT would have killed you off with Shoulder AIDS.
