to the "young" age of 49. How do you get that motivation back to get in the gym? Usually I'd wish for another deployment, but I think those are in my past.

You don't. You just go.
I moved and lost my running group. My running just went by the wayside. So a partner or group would help.

by setting goals for yourself. Rather it be strength goals, time goals, body goals, etc. Set them and focus on that

Ahhh
The deployment gains were the best. Nothing to do but go on FOB runs and workout all the time. Miss those days

Use it or lose it really starts to apply here. At that age you can easily see who takes care of themselves and who doesn't. You can have several decades of health and vitality ahead of you. Or the slide toward old age and frailty can start here and pick up speed based on your decisions. Choose wisely.

Pick a gym with lots of 20s and milf talent. The rest takes care of itself.

Make it part of your daily routine. After a few weeks and upin seeing early reaults, you'll start to look forward to it.

Kids? Maybe those kids about to start having kids? Out of shape? Just overall don't feel great?
There should be plenty of motivation to get in the gym and stay there. You want to live to see better days? Get active. You want to feel better? Get active. Your everyday life should be motivation enough to get in the gym. Look at the bigger picture and that should wake you up.

This is not the case for everyone.
I have always loved playing sports of any kind, but I could exercise every day for a year and never look forward to it.
I do it because it is necessary. I look forward to the results but not the gym/running/swimming/cycling itself.

One of my favorite pieces of YouTube wisdom (from Brian Alsruhe):
Action rarely follows motivation. Motivation follows action.
This is very true in the gym setting. If you wait for the motivation to hit or search for motivation, it may never come. If you act and derive motivation from action, the process works.

Exactly how it works for me with running.
The weird byproduct is that when I exercise regularly, I also eat better I suppose because I don't want to screw up the hard work by eating crap.

There's lots of reasons that I can use for not staying in shape but they'd probably viewed as just excuses. I say that because I view some of them that way.
Anyway... @ 5'9" and 187, I'm not overweight but just need to make it the daily part of life.

I don't see that as a weird byproduct personally.
Generally, action triggers momentum. Momentum, and the desire not to lose it, pushes you through the tougher stretches. The more the cycle repeats, the stronger the process becomes.
For me, it's forcing myself to just get something done on the days I'm tired. I will tell myself it doesn't have to be a PR day every day. The grind something out days lay the foundation for the PR days.

I'm 5'10 and 185 and I consider myself overweight. I need to be at 170. But that is me.

Do you have any kids? My dad and I started working out together initially. I was a little skinny shite, my dad was early 50's and out of shape.
Thanks to living near by each other, we were able to meet up 4-5 mornings a week for about 2 years. It was a nice way to have some QT while also holding each other accountable.

I may view myself as not being overweight but that doesn't mean I don't need to drop some. I do have a goal weight set for 165-170 so we'll see.
On kids... yes, I have two and staying active is a must.

Some will bash this, but find a good crossfit. They will have a set workout every day which helps keep you from slacking on your workout and as you meet people you will start getting that accountability to actually go.
