50 Miler Training Program

I am looking to run a 50 miler in late June. I remember sometime ago, a bigger guy on this board who ran ultras but used 400/800 style workouts with one long run a week rather than the insane mileage that most programs prescribe. I'd much rather do higher intensity workouts a few times a week, than run 8 miles a day with two long runs on the weekend. Any info on the topic, or if anyone knows the poster I am speaking, would be appreciated.
Sidenote: I am not trying to win this thing, or even run a good time, I just want to finish.

I just came across this article regarding strength training/Crossfit (Crossfit Endurance specifically) for ultra endurance training. In the article I believe the author mentions a similar regimen to what you are seeking. I came across this because I was researching how to continue strength training while training for a triathlon.

Interesting concept. training works in different ways for different people. article gave no real metrics beyond saying you can finish which for some may be their "A" goal. A quote and something I think holds true -
"It’s an amazing promise, particularly as it includes ‘long’ runs that never exceed 90 minutes. But if you’ve never done a really long run, race day could prove challenging, says Herrera, an ultra runner himself.
“Long runs prepare you for time on your feet, pacing, mental toughness and how to fuel yourself for multiple hours – you don’t really need to eat for a 90-minute training session,” he says. “I’m a firm believer in HIIT, but I still feel a runner – especially a beginner – has to cover 75 per cent of the distance in training for 26.2 to prepare for those elements.”

Taxman, I might be the poster. I’m 240, do ultras and maintain pretty good strength. At one point in time in my training I was doing a lot of 400m and 800m repeats.

Nice, what does your training for a 50 miler look like? I read Hal Koerner’s book and the mileage he is suggesting for a 50 seems absurd.
I’m 205 and I feel like my joints are going to give running 60 something miles a week.

The actual training schedule looks similar to any marathon training plan. Personally I never run farther than 25 miles during training however I race often when building up to a particular distance. When it comes to ultra running, there’s a point of diminishing returns on distance accumulation in a singular session. Anything longer than 2 hrs becomes “eating practice with some running.” Lots of trial and error in this sport.

I like people who take on big challenges. tiger claw double (50 miles) in May appears to be one with 15k of climbing and descent (quad wrecker). No idea what shape you're currently in or your experience level but if you are just now asking about training plans for a race in two months all I can do is wish you good luck.
