“SPRING STORMS - Enjoy the quiet…because the pattern is about to flip for us. Unfortunately just in time for Jazz Fest and Zurich Classic weekend. The fine details will work themselves out over time but severe weather and heavy rain signals are showing up in the 7-10 day range.”

Via Zach Fradella meteorologist for Fox 8 on Twitter.

Shame because it’s gotten pretty lucky the past 4-5 years with weather so it was bound to run up.

They had a couple rain delays last year from what I remember.

Hope it works out for both events, but this is the reality of events in the spring time in the south. Have to get lucky with the rain.

You are correct that there were a few delays last year, little rain but more due to lightning. Hopefully Zach is wrong and the rain stays to the north and west of the area like it has been doing this year.

I did forget about last year. I don’t think it was too long of a delay. I have PTSD from some years when they literally couldn’t play any holes on a Friday or something because of rain.

They have rain delays almost every year, which contributes to none of the big players not wanting to play the event.

One year they had heavy rains and high winds. Trees fell and crap was everywhere. Play had stopped around noon and didn’t resume until the next day. Grounds guys worked all night clearing trees and debris.

Question: I have best of Zurich for Saturday, if play is suspended, do they make all the fans actually leave the course? Or can you stay on property?

Severe Weather
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the PGA TOUR monitor the weather daily during tournament week. In the event of thunder storms, lightning or other severe weather, “Weather Warning” information will be displayed on the electronic scoreboards around the golf course. When these warnings appear, spectators are advised to take precautions and seek shelter immediately. The electronic scoreboards will keep spectators advised as to the length of the delay in play; however, in the event of severe weather and lightning, avoid the following areas: bleachers, tall or isolated trees, hilltops or other high areas, open fields, golf carts, lakes and ponds, metal fences, barricades, hospitality venues, etc.

During severe weather, avoid the following areas
Bleachers
Tall or isolated trees
Hilltops, other high areas
Open fields
Golf carts
Lakes and ponds
Metal fences, barricades, etc.
Hospitality venues

All that being said, most of that applies to lightning, storm cells, etc and not just rain.

Just got confirmation from someone on LRA. If there is lightning, the tents are cleared. If there is rain and play is delayed or suspended, the tents will still remain open until 5pm

Have always been fortunate and had nice weather. If tents are not available, does everyone just go back to their vehicles?

If they clear the tents…. What the hell are people supposed to do?

80-90% of people either park at the lot at the track and catch the bus or they uber.

I can’t remember if it was last year or the year before. A storm came through and we just chilled at the Tent in between 17-13/14. We do have the Best of tickets though.

Current forecast is high in the mid 80s each day. mostly sunny, 20% rain on Thurs, partly cloudy 30% spotty storms Friday, mostly cloudy 40% storm chance Saturday, partly cloudy 20% rain Sunday.

In other words, normal New Orleans weather. Everyone needs to calm down.

When lightning is approaching, they will issue weather warnings on the scoreboards / leaderboards. At that point, it is upon the spectator to make their own decision. If you don't want to get caught in sever weather, that is your time to leave. Even though those tents are grounded, they are not contracted to withstand a direct strike.

It's not ideal but if they issue a weather warning, it's on the guest at that point because you don't have anywhere to go really.

I have my gear packed already; quarter zip rain jacket and umbrella (no bag), small bag with sunscreen, Tylenol, and water bottle. It's south La in spring, it can be hot and sunny or cloudy and stormy within a few minutes. Be prepared.
