Heading there in a couple of weeks and will be playing the lakes course. Anyone play it recently? Thoughts?

I haven't played it recently, but I've played it about 10 times over the past 5 years or so. So, if you are asking about recent conditions, I can't help. If you haven't played it, it can be a bit frustrating your first time. I will never forget my first time playing, they paired us with a single. The guy had made a booklet from Google maps to help him know where to hit his shots. There are quite a few blind shots. So, I'd lean on playing partners if they have played before.
18 in particular is the craziest one. It's a par 5 with a giant hill in the middle. So, you hit your tee shot completely blind to the landing zone. Then, the approach to the green is blind if you go for it in 2 because the green is at the very bottom of the hill.
I did not like Lakes the first time I played it, but it has grown on me the more I've played it and understood where I need to hit my shots.

Personally I like the Lakes much more than the Highlands which is too tricked up for me.
Its always in decent shape and the wind always blows. Check the weather before you come. It could be warm or pretty cool with the wind.
Good clubhouse with decent food.
Fun course from the blues and a bear from the tips.

Blind shots and more blind shots. Windy as hell too.

haven't played the lakes, but have played the highlands course a few times. have lost a few balls that I thought were dead center of the fairway on all those blind tee shots.

I played the Highlands last week and it was in pretty good shape. Greens were solid but it did rain that day.
I like their courses but all the blind shots annoy me, you can't see more than half the greens you are shooting at. #7 might be my least favorite hole in all of golf

So being a box of Noodles is what I’m getting so far from the responses

I think it might be hole 8 that is like 180 yards of water and a 20-yard diameter green. frick that hole.

The course is always in good shape and is close for anyone south of I-10. I get sick of losing balls that roll off the hill and/or laying up. It is a frustrating course at times
I prefer Cypresswood for the money

That reminds me that hole #9 on Lakes is one of the most ridiculous holes I've ever played. It's only about 270 yards, but the green is basically on top of a levee. if you go for the green, you being short is way better than being long, because it's almost cliff past the hole.

Tradition is my favorite course in Houston. One of the worst things about me moving to Cypress is being 45 minutes from there.

What I call the mountain hole on the Highlands is ridiculous.
Have to hit a short tee shot and then have to hit a long shot uphill to a slender green.

The last few times I was out there,They trimmed back the brush so you can hit driver if you are confident you hit it straight enough. Still better to hit a 200 club for a cleaner lie but at least you have the option to get it closer now
9 on the high lands drives me nuts. Slow target golf

How is the pace of play? My fiancé is trying on wedding dresses while I’m playing a round with the future father in law.
Honestly I’m most excited about getting some good Tex mex
