New blood isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Look at last year with the same old. Team was unenthusiastic! Let the new guys play…. Mcnealy, young, griffin

Gotterup

Very intriguing name. Won the Scottish, outplayed Rory in the Open in the same paring on Sunday, Top 5 in next tournament, really playing well. But performance at FedEx Championship outside top 50 may have ended his chances

If I'm Keegan I sit out to avoid the distraction, leave off Morikawa, and replace him with either Burns or Gotterup. I know this is an LSU homer board but Gotterup seems like the type of persona which would feed off a home NYC crowd. Also, as was mentioned earlier, he already outplayed Rory head to head.

my bet is that person is Burns. He has been left off many teams that he should have been on, amateur and professional

What is the reasoning that Burns deserves to be on this team? He's 16th in points. I wouldn't mind if Burns makes the team but in no way can you say she should/earned his spot on the team. The top 12 in points are the only ones that have that argument. Anyone else that gets picked past the top 12 is getting gifted a spot. There is literally no argument that could be made that if Sam doesn't get picked he was wronged.

Who were the captains picks?

JT - result 1-2-1. Tied for 4th on US points
Speith - result 0-2-2. Basically had JT carrying him, with his back issues should never have been selected
Morikawa - 1-3-0 His worst Ryder Cup.
Brooks - 1-1-1 Decent, his game definitely appears off since LIV
Burns - 1-2-0 not bad for a debut. Win was paired with Morikawa which is a good combo if both make it
Fowler - Terrible pick. Bad historical record, only player to have zero points.

Team had terrible chemistry. Pairings made no sense all too often. Do you pair Scheffler with a bomber or a guy who consistently hits fairways?

If Homa was in the top 25 I’d take him in a heartbeat.

Gotterup is from New Jersey I think.

He bombs it.

Beth page black is made for a bomber.

Crowd would be boisterous when Gotterup hits bombs.

Why are we talking about Gotterup more than Cam Young?

I just like the name and his game.

Take them both.

Need some new blood.

Do we need new blood at home though?

We are better at home, but the bombers could really help us at Beth Page Black.

I’m sure we will pick deserving players.

Absolutely. They have beaten us much more recently at home than we have them.

But we’ve been incredibly dominant at home recently. Don’t think we need to change that much at home. We do need to change stuff on the road obviously.

Only the first day (and I know there’s a layover coming), but that’s a very promising leaderboard for the USA at East Lake after the first day. Especially Henley.

I know it’s also very unlikely, but I kinda wish they’d give Akshay an invite over someone like Griffin. He’s boom-or-bust, which doesn’t kill you in match play, and he’s still so young. It just makes sense to get someone like him into these events—almost like breaking in a true freshman in college football. Doesn’t have the play every match, and you’re not betting on consistency, you’re betting on upside.

Why do we need to bet on upside?

Griffin has been the 4th best American over the last 6 months and 2nd best American over the last 3 months. Leaving him off would not make sense at all.

Because apparently inconsistent guys who hit the ball long is attractive somehow.

Isn’t BPB an extremely long course?

If so, perhaps longer hitters might get a look by the captain.

I’m fine with whoever Keegan picks.

He may go chalk which I can’t argue with.

Or he may make a couple of skill specific picks.

It will be a great event.

It can be, US will set up the course how they want.

Blind stats on driver

296 avg - 71% FIR
326 avg - 54% FIR
307 avg - 61% FIR
313 avg - 54% FIR

You can pick 2 of those 4, understand you are going to need to play alternate shot with at least one of them.

Who do you take?

I need to know how many of the “missed fairways” were in hazards or blocked by trees.

Blocked by trees is statistically the hardest thing for a tour player. They make lots of bogeys from the trees.

A fairway “missed” on the first cut does not result in a difference of shots gained/lost. Even deep rough for the stronger players does not change it like trees do.

Trees and hazards(ponds/creeks/lakes) are the issues to track. A fairway bunker is often ok for their skills.

I had two in a hazard today. Actually struck one. good, but start line was not proper and rolled into pond. Other was a pitiful popcorn fart to right fairway bunker.

Maybe we should find data on similar courses/setups and pick the guys with the “analytics” that Keegan thinks gives our team an advantage.

Luke Donald did an amazing job setting the course in Italy up to give his guys a statistical advantage.

They played great, but they also were playing a course setup to their relative strengths compared to the American team
